- Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab:
- for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
- Israel joined himself to Baal Peor: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel.
- Yahweh said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel."
- Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor."
- Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
- When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;
- and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
- Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
- Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
- "Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn't consume the children of Israel in my jealousy.
- Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace:
- and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'"
- Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.
- The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.
- Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
- "Harass the Midianites, and strike them;
- for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor."

- וישב ישראל בשטים ויחל העם לזנות אל־בנות מואב׃
- ותקראן לעם לזבחי אלהיהן ויאכל העם וישתחוו לאלהיהן׃
- ויצמד ישראל לבעל פעור ויחר־אף יהוה בישראל׃
- ויאמר יהוה אל־משה קח את־כל־ראשי העם והוקע אותם ליהוה נגד השמש וישב חרון אף־יהוה מישראל׃
- ויאמר משה אל־שפטי ישראל הרגו איש אנשיו הנצמדים לבעל פעור׃
- והנה איש מבני ישראל בא ויקרב אל־אחיו את־המדינית לעיני משה ולעיני כל־עדת בני־ישראל והמה בכים פתח אהל מועד׃
- וירא פינחס בן־אלעזר בן־אהרן הכהן ויקם מתוך העדה ויקח רמח בידו׃
- ויבא אחר איש־ישראל אל־הקבה וידקר את־שניהם את איש ישראל ואת־האשה אל־קבתה ותעצר המגפה מעל בני ישראל׃
- ויהיו המתים במגפה ארבעה ועשרים אלף׃ ף
- וידבר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃
- פינחס בן־אלעזר בן־אהרן הכהן השיב את־חמתי מעל בני־ישראל בקנאו את־קנאתי בתוכם ולא־כליתי את־בני־ישראל בקנאתי׃
- לכן אמר הנני נתן לו את־בריתי שלום׃
- והיתה לו ולזרעו אחריו ברית כהנת עולם תחת אשר קנא לאלהיו ויכפר על־בני ישראל׃
- ושם איש ישראל המכה אשר הכה את־המדינית זמרי בן־סלוא נשיא בית־אב לשמעני׃
- ושם האשה המכה המדינית כזבי בת־צור ראש אמות בית־אב במדין הוא׃ ף
- וידבר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃
- צרור את־המדינים והכיתם אותם׃
- כי צררים הם לכם בנכליהם אשר־נכלו לכם על־דבר־פעור ועל־דבר כזבי בת־נשיא מדין אחתם המכה ביום־המגפה על־דבר־פעור׃

- Morabatur autem eo tempore Israël in Settim, et fornicatus est populus cum filiabus Moab,
- quæ vocaverunt eos ad sacrificia sua. At ille comederunt et adoraverunt deos earum.
- Initiatusque est Israël Beelphegor : et iratus Dominus,
- ait ad Moysen : Tolle cunctos principes populi, et suspende eos contra solem in patibulis, ut avertatur furor meus ab Israël.
- Dixitque Moyses ad judices Israël : Occidat unusquisque proximos suos, qui initiati sunt Beelphegor.
- Et ecce unus de filiis Israël intravit coram fratribus suis ad scortum Madianitidem, vidente Moyse, et omni turba filiorum Israël, qui flebant ante fores tabernaculi.
- Quod cum vidisset Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis, surrexit de medio multitudinis, et arrepto pugione,
- ingressus est post virum Israëlitem in lupanar, et perfodit ambos simul, virum scilicet et mulierem in locis genitalibus. Cessavitque plaga a filiis Israël :
- et occisi sunt viginti quatuor millia hominum.
- Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen :
- Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron sacerdotis avertit iram meam a filiis Israël : quia zelo meo commotus est contra eos, ut non ipse delerem filios Israël in zelo meo.
- Idcirco loquere ad eum : Ecce do ei pacem fœderis mei,
- et erit tam ipsi quam semini ejus pactum sacerdotii sempiternum : quia zelatus est pro Deo suo, et expiavit scelus filiorum Israël.

- And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
- And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
- And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
- And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
- And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.
- And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
- And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
- And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
- And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
- And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
- Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
- Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
- And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
- Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
- And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
- And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
- Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
- For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
