When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he gave them the words of the prayer that is now known as "The Lord's Prayer". It begins, "Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name". This prayer is very familiar to contemporary Christians and is said weekly in many church services, especially more traditional ones. The longer version found in the Gospel of Matthew is the most well known prayer within the entire Bible.
Matthew 6
The text can be found in Matthew 6:
- Pray like this: 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
- Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
- Give us today our daily bread.
- Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
- Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.'
Luke 11
A shorter version of the text is also found in Luke 11:
- He said to them, "When you pray, say, 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on Earth, as it is in heaven.
- Give us day by day our daily bread.
- Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'"
