- Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.
- It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.
- How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
- I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.
- I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
- Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.
- Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me its interpretation.
- But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, [saying],
- Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.
- Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and its height was great.
- The tree grew, and was strong, and its height reached to the sky, and its sight to the end of all the earth.
- The leaves of it were beautiful, and its fruit much, and in it was food for all: the animals of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the sky lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.
- I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the sky.
- He cried aloud, and said thus, Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the animals get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.
- Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth:
- let his heart be changed from man's, and let an animal's heart be given to him; and let seven times pass over him.
- The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.
- This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.
- Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, Belteshazzar, don't let the dream, or the interpretation, trouble you. Belteshazzar answered, My lord, the dream be to those who hate you, and its interpretation to your adversaries.
- The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the sky, and its sight to all the earth;
- whose leaves were beautiful, and its fruit much, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation:
- it is you, O king, that are grown and become strong; for your greatness is grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.
- Whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the sky, and saying, Cut down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him;
- this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come on my lord the king:
- that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and you shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.
- Whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you shall have known that the heavens do rule.
- Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.
- All this came on the king Nebuchadnezzar.
- At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.
- The king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?
- While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from the sky, [saying], O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you:
- and you shall be driven from men; and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field; you shall be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.
- The same hour was the thing fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until his hair was grown like eagles' [feathers], and his nails like birds' [claws].
- At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.
- All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or ask him, What are you doing?
- At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me.
- Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.

- נבוכדנצר מלכא לכל־עממיא אמיא ולשניא די־ בכל־ארעא שלמכון ישגא׃
- אתיא ותמהיא די עבד עמי אלהא שפר קדמי להחויה׃
- אתוהי כמה רברבין ותמהוהי כמה תקיפין מלכותה מלכות עלם ושלטנה עם־דר ודר׃
- אנה נבוכדנצר שלה הוית בביתי ורעןן בהיכלי׃
- חלם חזית וידחלנני והרהרין על־משכבי וחזוי ראשי יבהלנני׃
- ומני שים טעם להנעלה קדמי לכל חכימי בבל די־פשר חלמא יהודענני׃
- באדין חרטמיא אשפיא וגזריא וחלמא אמר אנה קדמיהון ופשרה לא־מהודעין לי׃
- ועד אחרין על קדמי דניאל די־שמה בלטשאצר כשם אלהי ודי רוח־אלהין קדישין בה וחלמא קדמוהי אמרת׃
- בלטשאצר רב חרטמיא די אנה ידעת די רוח אלהין קדישין בך וכל־רז לא־אנס לך חזוי חלמי די־חזית ופשרה אמר׃
- וחזוי ראשי על־משכבי חזה הוית ואלו אילן בגוא ארעא ורומה שגיא׃
- רבה אילנא ותקף ורומה ימטא לשמיא וחזותה לסוף כל־ארעא׃
- עפיה שפיר ואנבה שגיא ומזון לכלא־בה תחתוהי תטלל חיות ברא ובענפוהי צפרי שמיא ומנה יתזין כל־בשרא׃
- חזה הוית בחזוי ראשי על־משכבי ואלו עיר וקדיש מן־שמיא נחת׃

- לבבה מן־ ישנון ולבב חיוה יתיהב לה ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עלוהי׃
- בגזרת עירין פתגמא ומאמר קדישין שאלתא עד־דברת די ינדעון חייא די־שליט במלכות ולמן־די יצבא יתננה ושפל אנשים יקים ׃

- ולך טרדין מן־אנשא ועם־חיות ברא להוה מדרך ועשבא כתורין לך יטעמון ומטל שמיא לך מצבעין ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עד די־תנדע די־שליט במלכות אנשא ולמן־די יצבא יתננה׃
- ודי אמרו למשבק עקר שרשוהי די אילנא מלכותך לך קימה מן־די תנדע די שלטן שמיא׃
- להן מלכא מלכי ישפר בצדקה פרק ועויתך במחן ענין הן תהוא ארכה לשלותך׃
- כלא מטא על־נבוכדנצר מלכא׃ ף
- לקצת ירחין תרי־עשר על־היכל מלכותא די בבל מהלך הוה׃
- ענה מלכא ואמר הלא דא־היא בבל רבתא די־אנה בניתה לבית מלכו בתקף חסני וליקר הדרי׃
- עוד מלתא בפם מלכא קל מן־שמיא נפל לך אמרין נבוכדנצר מלכא מלכותה עדת מנך׃
- ומן־אנשא לך טרדין ועם־חיות ברא מדרך עשבא כתורין לך יטעמון ושבעה עדנין יחלפון עד די־תנדע די־שליט במלכות אנשא ולמן־די יצבא יתננה׃
- בה־שעתא מלתא ספת על־נבוכדנצר ומן־אנשא טריד ועשבא כתורין יאכל ומטל שמיא גשמה יצטבע עד די שערה כנשרין רבה וטפרוהי כצפרין׃
- ולקצת יומיה אנה נבוכדנצר עיני לשמיא נטלת ומנדעי עלי יתוב ברכת ולחי עלמא שבחת והדרת די שלטנה שלטן עלם ומלכותה עם־דר ודר׃
- וכל־ ארעא כלה חשיבין וכמצביה עבד בחיל שמיא ארעא ולא איתי די־ימחא בידה ויאמר לה מה עבדת׃
- בה־זמנא מנדעי יתוב עלי וליקר מלכותי הדרי וזוי יתוב עלי ולי הדברי ורברבני יבעון ועל־מלכותי התקנת ורבו יתירה הוספת לי׃
- כען אנה נבוכדנצר משבח ומרוםם ומהדר למלך שמיא די כל־מעבדוהי קשט וארחתה דין ודי מהלכין בגוה יכל להשפלה׃ ף

- Nabuchodonosor rex, omnibus populis, gentibus, et linguis, qui habitant in universa terra, pax vobis multiplicetur.
- Signa, et mirabilia fecit apud me Deus excelsus. Placuit ergo mihi prædicare
- signa ejus, quia magna sunt : et mirabilia ejus, quia fortia : et regnum ejus regnum sempiternum, et potestas ejus in generationem et generationem.
- Ego Nabuchodonosor quietus eram in domo mea, et florens in palatio meo :
- somnium vidi, quod perterruit me : et cogitationes meæ in strato meo, et visiones capitis mei conturbaverunt me.
- Et per me propositum est decretum ut introducerentur in conspectu meo cuncti sapientes Babylonis, et ut solutionem somnii indicarent mihi.
- Tunc ingrediebantur arioli, magi, Chaldæi, et aruspices, et somnium narravi in conspectu eorum : et solutionem ejus non indicaverunt mihi,
- donec collega ingressus est in conspectu meo Daniel, cui nomen Baltassar secundum nomen dei mei, qui habet spiritum deorum sanctorum in semetipso : et somnium coram ipso locutus sum.
- Baltassar, princeps ariolorum, quoniam ego scio quod spiritum sanctorum deorum habeas in te, et omne sacramentum non est impossibile tibi : visiones somniorum meorum, quas vidi, et solutionem earum narra.
- Visio capitis mei in cubili meo : videbam, et ecce arbor in medio terræ, et altitudo ejus nimia.
- Magna arbor, et fortis, et proceritas ejus contingens cælum : aspectus illius erat usque ad terminos universæ terræ.
- Folia ejus pulcherrima, et fructus ejus nimius : et esca universorum in ea. Subter eam habitabant animalia et bestiæ, et in ramis ejus conversabantur volucres cæli : et ex ea vescebatur omnis caro.

- Tunc Daniel, cujus nomen Baltassar, cœpit intra semetipsum tacitus cogitare quasi una hora : et cogitationes ejus conturbabant eum. Respondens autem rex, ait : Baltassar, somnium et interpretatio ejus non conturbent te. Respondit Baltassar, et dixit : Domine mi, somnium his, qui te oderunt, et interpretatio ejus hostibus tuis sit.
- Arborem, quam vidisti sublimem atque robustam, cujus altitudo pertingit ad cælum, et aspectus illius in omnem terram ;
- et rami ejus pulcherrimi, et fructus ejus nimius, et esca omnium in ea, subter eam habitantes bestiæ agri, et in ramis ejus commorantes aves cæli :
- tu es rex, qui magnificatus es, et invaluisti : et magnitudo tua crevit, et pervenit usque ad cælum, et potestas tua in terminos universæ terræ.
- Quod autem vidit rex vigilem, et sanctum descendere de cælo, et dicere : Succidite arborem, et dissipate illam, attamen germen radicum ejus in terra dimittite, et vinciatur ferro et ære in herbis foris, et rore cæli conspergatur, et cum feris sit pabulum ejus, donec septem tempora mutentur super eum :
- hæc est interpretatio sententiæ Altissimi, quæ pervenit super dominum meum regem,

- Quam ob rem, rex, consilium meum placeat tibi, et peccata tua eleemosynis redime, et iniquitates tuas misericordiis pauperum : forsitan ignoscet delictis tuis.

- Igitur post finem dierum, ego Nabuchodonosor oculos meos ad cælum levavi, et sensus meus redditus est mihi : et Altissimo benedixi, et viventem in sempiternum laudavi et glorificavi : quia potestas ejus potestas sempiterna, et regnum ejus in generationem et generationem.
- Et omnes habitatores terræ apud eum in nihilum reputati sunt : juxta voluntatem enim suam facit tam in virtutibus cæli quam in habitatoribus terræ : et non est qui resistat manui ejus, et dicat ei : Quare fecisti ?
- In ipso tempore sensus meus reversus est ad me, et ad honorem regni mei, decoremque perveni : et figura mea reversa est ad me, et optimates mei et magistratus mei requisierunt me, et in regno meo restitutus sum : et magnificentia amplior addita est mihi.
- Nunc igitur, ego Nabuchodonosor laudo, et magnifico, et glorifico regem cæli : quia omnia opera ejus vera, et viæ ejus judicia, et gradientes in superbia potest humiliare.
