- Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that behold, the place was a place for livestock;
- the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
- "Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
- the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock."
- They said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; don't bring us over the Jordan."
- Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, "Shall your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here?
- Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them?
- Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
- For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Yahweh had given them.
- Yahweh's anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying,
- 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
- except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed Yahweh completely.'
- Yahweh's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.
- "Behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.
- For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people."
- They came near to him, and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones:
- but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
- We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
- For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward."
- Moses said to them, "If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to the war,
- and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
- and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless towards Yahweh, and towards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before Yahweh.
- "But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.
- Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth."
- The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, "Your servants will do as my lord commands.
- Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock, shall be there in the cities of Gilead;
- but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, as my lord says."
- So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel.
- Moses said to them, "If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle, before Yahweh, and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
- but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan."
- The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, "As Yahweh has said to your servants, so will we do.
- We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance [shall remain] with us beyond the Jordan."
- Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to the cities of it with [their] borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.
- The children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
- and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,
- and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
- The children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
- and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built.
- The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
- Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
- Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair.
- Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

- ומקנה רב היה לבני ראובן ולבני־גד עצום מאד ויראו את־ארץ יעזר ואת־ארץ גלעד והנה המקום מקום מקנה׃
- ויבאו בני־גד ובני ראובן ויאמרו אל־משה ואל־אלעזר הכהן ואל־נשיאי העדה לאמר׃
- עטרות ודיבן ויעזר ונמרה וחשבון ואלעלה ושבם ונבו ובען׃
- הארץ אשר הכה יהוה לפני עדת ישראל ארץ מקנה הוא ולעבדיך מקנה׃ ס
- ויאמרו אם־מצאנו חן בעיניך יתן את־הארץ הזאת לעבדיך לאחזה אל־תעברנו את־הירדן׃
- ויאמר משה לבני־גד ולבני ראובן האחיכם יבאו למלחמה ואתם תשבו פה׃
- ולמה את־לב בני ישראל מעבר אל־הארץ אשר־נתן להם יהוה׃
- כה עשו אבתיכם בשלחי אתם מקדש ברנע לראות את־הארץ׃
- ויעלו עד־נחל אשכול ויראו את־הארץ ויניאו את־לב בני ישראל לבלתי־בא אל־הארץ אשר־נתן להם יהוה׃
- ויחר־אף יהוה ביום ההוא וישבע לאמר׃
- אם־יראו האנשים העלים ממצרים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה את האדמה אשר נשבעתי לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב כי לא־מלאו אחרי׃
- בלתי כלב בן־יפנה הקנזי ויהושע בן־נון כי מלאו אחרי יהוה׃
- ויחר־אף יהוה בישראל וינעם במדבר ארבעים שנה עד־תם כל־הדור העשה הרע בעיני יהוה׃
- והנה קמתם תחת אבתיכם תרבות אנשים חטאים לספות עוד על חרון אף־יהוה אל־ישראל׃
- כי תשובן מאחריו ויסף עוד להניחו במדבר ושחתם לכל־העם הזה׃ ס
- ויגשו אליו ויאמרו גדרת צאן נבנה למקננו פה וערים לטפנו׃
- ואנחנו נחלץ חשים לפני בני ישראל עד אשר אם־הביאנם אל־מקוםם וישב טפנו בערי המבצר מפני ישבי הארץ׃
- לא נשוב אל־בתינו עד התנחל בני ישראל איש נחלתו׃
- כי לא ננחל אתם מעבר לירדן והלאה כי באה נחלתנו אלינו מעבר הירדן מזרחה׃ ף
- ויאמר אליהם משה אם־תעשון את־הדבר הזה אם־תחלצו לפני יהוה למלחמה׃
- ועבר לכם כל־חלוץ את־הירדן לפני יהוה עד הורישו את־איביו מפניו׃
- ונכבשה הארץ לפני יהוה ואחר תשבו והייתם נקיים מיהוה ומישראל והיתה הארץ הזאת לכם לאחזה לפני יהוה׃
- ואם־לא תעשון כן הנה חטאתם ליהוה ודעו חטאתכם אשר תמצא אתכם׃
- בנו־לכם ערים לטפכם וגדרת לצנאכם והיצא מפיכם תעשו׃
- ויאמר בני־גד ובני ראובן אל־משה לאמר עבדיך יעשו כאשר אדני מצוה׃
- טפנו נשינו מקננו וכל־בהמתנו יהיו־שם בערי הגלעד׃
- ועבדיך יעברו כל־חלוץ צבא לפני יהוה למלחמה כאשר אדני דבר׃
- ויצו להם משה את אלעזר הכהן ואת יהושע בן־נון ואת־ראשי אבות המטות לבני ישראל׃
- ויאמר משה אלהם אם־יעברו בני־גד ובני־ראובן אתכם את־הירדן כל־חלוץ למלחמה לפני יהוה ונכבשה הארץ לפניכם ונתתם להם את־ארץ הגלעד לאחזה׃
- ואם־לא יעברו חלוצים אתכם ונאחזו בתככם בארץ כנען׃
- ויענו בני־גד ובני ראובן לאמר את אשר דבר יהוה אל־עבדיך כן נעשה׃
- נחנו נעבר חלוצים לפני יהוה ארץ כנען ואתנו אחזת נחלתנו מעבר לירדן׃
- ויתן להם משה לבני־גד ולבני ראובן ולחצי שבט מנשה בן־יוסף את־ממלכת סיחן מלך האמרי ואת־ממלכת עוג מלך הבשן הארץ לעריה בגבלת ערי הארץ סביב׃
- ויבנו בני־גד את־דיבן ואת־עטרת ואת ערער׃
- ואת־עטרת שופן ואת־יעזר ויגבהה׃
- ואת־בית נמרה ואת־בית הרן ערי מבצר וגדרת צאן׃
- ובני ראובן בנו את־חשבון ואת־אלעלא ואת קריתים׃
- ואת־נבו ואת־בעל מעון מוסבת שם ואת־שבמה ויקראו בשמת את־שמות הערים אשר בנו׃
- וילכו בני מכיר בן־מנשה גלעדה וילכדה ויורש את־האמרי אשר־בה׃
- ויתן משה את־הגלעד למכיר בן־מנשה וישב בה׃
- ויאיר בן־מנשה הלך וילכד את־חותיהם ויקרא אתהן חות יאיר׃
- ונבח הלך וילכד את־קנת ואת־בנתיה ויקרא לה נבח בשמו׃ ף

- Filii autem Ruben et Gad habebant pecora multa, et erat illis in jumentis infinita substantia. Cumque vidissent Jazer et Galaad aptas animalibus alendis terras,
- venerunt ad Moysen, et ad Elezarum sacerdotem, et principes multitudinis, atque dixerunt :
- Ataroth, et Dibon, et Jazer, et Nemra, Hesebon, et Eleale, et Saban, et Nebo, et Beon,
- terra, quam percussit Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, regio uberrima est ad pastum animalium : et nos servi tui habemus jumenta plurima,
- precamurque si invenimus gratiam coram te, ut des nobis famulis tuis eam in possessionem, nec facias nos transire Jordanem.
- Quibus respondit Moyses : Numquid fratres vestri ibunt ad pugnam, et vos hic sedebitis ?
- cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël, ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus ?
- Nonne ita egerunt patres vestri, quando misi de Cadesbarne ad explorandam terram ?
- cumque venissent usque ad Vallem botri, lustrata omni regione, subverterunt cor filiorum Israël, ut non intrarent fines, quos eis Dominus dedit.
- Qui iratus juravit, dicens :
- Si videbunt homines isti, qui ascenderunt ex Ægypto a viginti annis et supra, terram, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob : et noluerunt sequi me,
- præter Caleb filium Jephone Cenezæum, et Josue filium Nun : isti impleverunt voluntatem meam.
- Iratusque Dominus adversum Israël, circumduxit eum per desertum quadraginta annis, donec consumeretur universa generatio, quæ fecerat malum in conspectu ejus.
- Et ecce, inquit, vos surrexistis pro patribus vestris, incrementa et alumni hominum peccatorum, ut augeretis furorem Domini contra Israël.
- Quod si nolueritis sequi eum, in solitudine populum derelinquet, et vos causa eritis necis omnium.
- At illi prope accedentes, dixerunt : Caulas ovium fabricabimus, et stabula jumentorum, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas :
- nos autem ipsi armati et accincti pergemus ad prælium ante filios Israël, donec introducamus eos ad loca sua. Parvuli nostri, et quidquid habere possumus, erunt in urbibus muratis, propter habitatorum insidias.
- Non revertemur in domos nostras, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam :
- nec quidquam quæremus trans Jordanem, quia jam habemus nostram possessionem in orientali ejus plaga.
- Quibus Moyses ait : Si facitis quod promittitis, expediti pergite coram Domino ad pugnam :
- et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos,
- et subjiciatur ei omnis terra : tunc eritis inculpabiles apud Dominum et apud Israël, et obtinebitis regiones, quas vultis, coram Domino.
- Sin autem quod dicitis, non feceritis, nulli dubium est quin peccetis in Deum : et scitote quoniam peccatum vestrum apprehendet vos.
- Ædificate ergo urbes parvulis vestris, et caulas, et stabula ovibus ac jumentis : et quod polliciti estis, implete.
- Dixeruntque filii Gad et Ruben ad Moysen : Servi tui sumus : faciemus quod jubet dominus noster.
- Parvulos nostros, et mulieres, et pecora, ac jumenta relinquemus in urbibus Galaad :
- nos autem famuli tui omnes expediti pergemus ad bellum, sicut tu, domine, loqueris.
- Præcepit ergo Moyses Eleazaro sacerdoti, et Josue filio Nun, et principibus familiarum per tribus Israël, et dixit ad eos :
