Luke 12 Text (WEB) Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. "I tell you, my friends, don't be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him. "Aren't five sparrows sold for two assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don't be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows. "I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God; but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God. Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but those who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, don't be anxious how or what you will answer, or what you will say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that same hour what you must say." One of the multitude said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" He said to them, "Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses." He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I don't have room to store my crops?' He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared--whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, don't be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they don't sow, they don't reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds! Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his height? If then you aren't able to do even the least things, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow. They don't toil, neither do they spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if this is how God clothes the grass in the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith? Don't seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious. For the nations of the world seek after all of these things, but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek God's Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you. Don't be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. Sell that which you have, and give gifts to the needy. Make for yourselves purses which don't grow old, a treasure in the heavens that doesn't fail, where no thief approaches, neither moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. "Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning. Be like men watching for their lord, when he returns from the marriage feast; that, when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching when he comes. Most certainly I tell you, that he will dress himself, and make them recline, and will come and serve them. They will be blessed if he comes in the second or third watch, and finds them so. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don't expect him." Peter said to him, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?" The Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has. But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn't expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn't know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful. That servant, who knew his lord's will, and didn't prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whoever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked. "I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled. But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division. For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. They will be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." He said to the multitudes also, "When you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it happens. When a south wind blows, you say, 'There will be a scorching heat,' and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it that you don't interpret this time? Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? For when you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be released from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will by no means get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny."
Luke 12 Text (Hebrew) ויהי עד כה ועד כה בהתאסף רבבות עם עד כי לחצו איש את רעהו ויחל לדבר אל תלמידיו בראשונה השמרו לנפשתיכם משאור הפרושים שהוא החנפה׃ ואין דבר מכסה אשר לא יגלה ואין נעלם אשר לא יודע׃ לכן כל אשר דברתם בחשך באור ישמע ואת אשר לחשתם לאזן בחדרים קרא יקרא על הגגות׃ ואני אמר לכם ידידי אל תיראו מן הממיתים את הגוף ואחרי זאת אין לאל ידם לעשות עוד דבר׃ אבל אורה אתכם את אשר תיראו יראו את אשר יש לו שלטן אחרי המיתו להשליך אל גיהנם הן אני אמר לכם אותו תיראון׃ הלא חמש צפרים תמכרנה בשני אסרים ואין אחת מהן נשכחת לפני האלהים׃ ואתם גם שערות ראשכם נמנות כלן לכן אל תיראו יקרתם מצפרים רבות׃ ואני אמר לכם כל אשר יודה בי לפני האדם גם בן האדם יודה בו לפני מלאכי אלהים׃ ואשר יכחש בי לפני האדם הוא יכחש לפני מלאכי אלהים׃ וכל אשר ידבר דבר חרפה על בן האדם יסלח לו והמגדף את רוח הקדש לא יסלח לו׃ וכאשר יביאו אתכם אל בתי הכנסיות ולפני הרשיות והשלטונים אל תדאגו איך או במה תצטדקו ומה תדברו׃ כי רוח הקדש הוא יורה אתכם בשעה ההיא את הנכון לדבר׃ ויאמר אליו אחד מן העם רבי אמר נא אל אחי ויחלק אתי את הירשה׃ ויאמר אליו בן אדם מי שמני עליכם לשפט ולמחלק׃ ויאמר אליהם ראו והשמרו לכם מבצע בצע כי חיי האדם אינם תלוים בהרבות נכסיו׃ וישא משלו ויאמר אליהם לאמר שדה איש עשיר אחד עשה תבואה הרבה׃ ויחשב בלבו לאמר מה אעשה כי אין לי מקום לכנוס בו את תבואתי׃ ויאמר את זאת אעשה הרס את אסמי ובנה גדולים מהם ואכנסה שמה את כל יבולי וטובי׃ ואמר לנפשי נפשי יש לך עתודות הרבה לשנים רבות הנפשי אכלי שתי ושישי׃ והאלהים אמר לו אתה הכסיל בעצם הלילה הזה ידרשו ממך את נפשך ואשר הכינות לך למי יהיה׃ זה חלק האצר לו אצרות ולא יעשיר באלהים׃ ויאמר אל תלמידיו לכן אני אמר לכם אל תדאגו לנפשכם מה תאכלו ולגופכם מה תלבשו׃ הנפש יקרה היא מן המזון והגוף יקר מן המלבוש׃ התבוננו אל הערבים אשר אינם זרעים ואינם קצרים וגם אין להם מגורה ואוצר והאלהים מכלכל אותם ומה מעלים אתם מן העוף׃ ומי זה מכם אשר בדאגתו יוכל להוסיף אמה אחת על קומתו׃ ועתה הן מעט מזער אין ביכלתכם וליותר מה תדאגו׃ התבוננו אל השושנים הצמחות ואינן טות ואינן ארגות ואני אמר לכם כי גם שלמה בכל הדרו לא היה לבוש כאחת מהנה׃ ואם ככה ילביש אלהים את חציר השדה אשר היום ישנו ומחר ישלך לתוך התנור אף כי אתכם קטני האמונה׃ גם אתם אל תדרשו מה תאכלו ומה תשתו ואל תהלכו בגדלות׃ כי את כל אלה מבקשים גויי הארץ ואביכם הוא יודע כי צריכים אתם לאלה׃ אך בקשו את מלכות האלהים ונוסף לכם כל אלה׃ אל תירא העדר הקטן כי רצה אביכם לתת לכם את המלכות׃ מכרו את רכושכם ותנו צדקה עשו לכם כיסים אשר לא יבלו ואוצר בשמים אשר לא יגרע לעולם אשר גנב לא יקרב אליו וסס לא יאכלהו׃ כי במקום אשר אוצרכם בו שם יהיה גם לבבכם׃ מתניכם יהיו חגורים והנרות דלקים׃ ואתם היו דמים לאנשים המחכים לאדניהם מתי ישוב מן החתנה וכאשר יבוא ודפק יפתחו לו כרגע׃ אשרי העבדים ההם אשר בבוא האדון ימצאם שקדים אמן אמר אני לכם כי יתאזר ויושיבם וילך לשרת אותם׃ ואם יבוא באשמרה השנית או באשמרה השלישית וכן ימצא אשרי העבדים ההם׃ וזאת דעו אשר אם ידע ידע בעל הבית באי זו שעה יבוא הגנב כי עתה שקד שקוד ולא יתן לחתר את ביתו׃ לכן גם אתם היו נכונים כי בשעה אשר לא פללתם יבוא בן האדם׃ ויאמר פטרוס אדנינו הלנו אתה אמר את המשל הזה אם גם לכל אדם׃ ויאמר האדון מי הוא אפוא הסכן הנאמן והנבון אשר יפקידהו האדון על עבדתו לתת את ארחתם בעתו׃ אשרי העבד ההוא אשר בבא אדניו ימצאהו עשה כן׃ אמת אמר אני לכם כי על כל אשר יש לו יפקידהו׃ והעבד ההוא אם יאמר בלבו בשש אדני לבוא והחל להכות את העבדים ואת השפחות ולאכל ולשתות ולשכר׃ בוא יבוא אדני העבד ההוא ביום לא יצפה ובשעה לא ידע וישסף אותו וישים את חלקו עם הסוררים׃ ]84-74[ והעבד ההוא אשר ידע את רצון אדניו ולא הכין ולא עשה כרצונו יכה מכות רבות, ואשר לא ידע ועשה דברים אשר עליהם בן הכות הוא לא יכה כי אם מעט כי כל איש אשר נתן לו הרבה דרוש ידרש ממנו הרבה ואשר הפקידו בידו הרבה ישאלו מאתו יותר׃ ]84-74[׃ להפיל אש על הארץ באתי ומה חפץ אני כי כבר בערה׃ ועלי טבילה להטבל ומה יצר לי עד כי תשלם׃ החשבים אתם כי באתי לתת שלום בארץ אני אמר לכם לא כי אם מחלקת׃ כי מעתה חמשה בבית אחד יחלקו שלשה על שנים ושנים על שלשה׃ האב יחלק על הבן והבן על האב האם על הבת והבת על האם החמות על הכלה והכלה על החמות׃ ויאמר גם אל המון העם כראתכם את הענן עלה במערב ואמרתם גשם בא וכן יהיה׃ ואם נשבה רוח הנגב תאמרו הנה חם בא וגם יבוא׃ החנפים את פני הארץ והשמים ידעתם לבחן ואת העת הזאת איך לא תבחנו׃ למה אף מנפשכם לא תשפטו את הישר׃ כי כאשר תלך אל השר עם איש ריבך בעודך בדרך השתדל להנצל ממנו פן יסחב אותך אל השפט והשפט ימסרך אל השוטר והשוטר ישליכך אל בית הכלא׃ ואני אמר לך לא תצא משם עד אם שלמת גם את הפרוטה האחרונה׃
Luke 12 Text (Greek) εν οις επισυναχθεισων των μυριαδων του οχλου ωστε καταπατειν αλληλους ηρξατο λεγειν προς τους μαθητας αυτου πρωτον προσεχετε εαυτοις απο της ζυμης ητις εστιν υποκρισις των φαρισαιων ουδεν δε συγκεκαλυμμενον εστιν ο ουκ αποκαλυφθησεται και κρυπτον ο ου γνωσθησεται ανθ ων οσα εν τη σκοτια ειπατε εν τω φωτι ακουσθησεται και ο προς το ους ελαλησατε εν τοις ταμειοις κηρυχθησεται επι των δωματων λεγω δε υμιν τοις φιλοις μου μη φοβηθητε απο των αποκτεινοντων το σωμα και μετα ταυτα μη εχοντων περισσοτερον τι ποιησαι υποδειξω δε υμιν τινα φοβηθητε φοβηθητε τον μετα το αποκτειναι εχοντα εξουσιαν εμβαλειν εις την γεενναν ναι λεγω υμιν τουτον φοβηθητε ουχι πεντε στρουθια πωλουνται ασσαριων δυο και εν εξ αυτων ουκ εστιν επιλελησμενον ενωπιον του θεου αλλα και αι τριχες της κεφαλης υμων πασαι ηριθμηνται μη φοβεισθε πολλων στρουθιων διαφερετε λεγω δε υμιν πας ος αν εν εμοι εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων και ο υιος του ανθρωπου ομολογησει εν αυτω εμπροσθεν των αγγελων του θεου ο δε αρνησαμενος με ενωπιον των ανθρωπων απαρνηθησεται ενωπιον των αγγελων του θεου και πας ος ερει λογον εις τον υιον του ανθρωπου αφεθησεται αυτω τω δε εις το αγιον πνευμα βλασφημησαντι ουκ αφεθησεται οταν δε εισφερωσιν υμας επι τας συναγωγας και τας αρχας και τας εξουσιας μη μεριμνησητε πως απολογησησθε η τι ειπητε το γαρ αγιον πνευμα διδαξει υμας εν αυτη τη ωρα α δει ειπειν ειπεν δε τις εκ του οχλου αυτω διδασκαλε ειπε τω αδελφω μου μερισασθαι μετ εμου την κληρονομιαν ο δε ειπεν αυτω ανθρωπε τις με κατεστησεν κριτην η μεριστην εφ υμας ειπεν δε προς αυτους ορατε και φυλασσεσθε απο πασης πλεονεξιας οτι ουκ εν τω περισσευειν τινι η ζωη αυτου εστιν εκ των υπαρχοντων αυτω ειπεν δε παραβολην προς αυτους λεγων ανθρωπου τινος πλουσιου ευφορησεν η χωρα και διελογιζετο εν εαυτω λεγων τι ποιησω οτι ουκ εχω που συναξω τους καρπους μου και ειπεν τουτο ποιησω καθελω μου τας αποθηκας και μειζονας οικοδομησω και συναξω εκει παντα τον σιτον και τα αγαθα μου και ερω τη ψυχη μου ψυχη εχεις πολλα αγαθα εις ετη πολλα αναπαυου φαγε ευφραινου ειπεν δε αυτω ο θεος αφρων ταυτη τη νυκτι την ψυχην σου απο σου α δε ητοιμασας τινι εσται [[Greek:|Greek:]] ο θησαυριζων εαυτω και μη εις θεον [[Greek:{VAR2:|{VAR2:]] πλουτων ειπεν δε προς τους μαθητας δια τουτο λεγω υμιν μη μεριμνατε τη ψυχη τι φαγητε μηδε τω σωματι τι ενδυσησθε η γαρ ψυχη πλειον εστιν της τροφης και το σωμα του ενδυματος κατανοησατε τους κορακας οτι ου σπειρουσιν ουδε θεριζουσιν οις ουκ εστιν ταμειον ουδε αποθηκη και ο θεος τρεφει αυτους ποσω μαλλον υμεις διαφερετε των πετεινων τις δε εξ υμων μεριμνων δυναται επι την ηλικιαν αυτου προσθειναι πηχυν ει ουν ουδε ελαχιστον δυνασθε τι περι των λοιπων μεριμνατε κατανοησατε τα κρινα πως αυξανει ου κοπια ουδε νηθει λεγω δε υμιν ουδε σολομων εν παση τη δοξη αυτου περιεβαλετο ως εν τουτων ει δε εν αγρω τον χορτον οντα σημερον και αυριον εις κλιβανον βαλλομενον ο θεος ουτως αμφιεζει ποσω μαλλον υμας ολιγοπιστοι και υμεις μη ζητειτε τι φαγητε και τι πιητε και μη μετεωριζεσθε ταυτα γαρ παντα τα εθνη του κοσμου επιζητουσιν υμων δε ο πατηρ οιδεν οτι χρηζετε τουτων πλην ζητειτε την βασιλειαν αυτου και ταυτα προστεθησεται υμιν μη φοβου το μικρον ποιμνιον οτι ευδοκησεν ο πατηρ υμων δουναι υμιν την βασιλειαν πωλησατε τα υπαρχοντα υμων και δοτε ελεημοσυνην ποιησατε εαυτοις βαλλαντια μη παλαιουμενα θησαυρον ανεκλειπτον εν τοις ουρανοις οπου κλεπτης ουκ εγγιζει ουδε σης διαφθειρει οπου γαρ εστιν ο θησαυρος υμων εκει και η καρδια υμων εσται εστωσαν υμων αι οσφυες περιεζωσμεναι και οι λυχνοι καιομενοι και υμεις ομοιοι ανθρωποις προσδεχομενοις τον κυριον εαυτων ποτε αναλυση εκ των γαμων ινα ελθοντος και κρουσαντος ευθεως ανοιξωσιν αυτω μακαριοι οι δουλοι εκεινοι ους ελθων ο κυριος ευρησει γρηγορουντας αμην λεγω υμιν οτι περιζωσεται και ανακλινει αυτους και παρελθων διακονησει αυτοις καν εν τη δευτερα καν εν τη τριτη φυλακη ελθη και ευρη ουτως μακαριοι εισιν εκεινοι τουτο δε γινωσκετε οτι ει ηδει ο οικοδεσποτης ποια ωρα ο κλεπτης ερχεται αφηκεν διορυχθηναι τον οικον αυτου και υμεις γινεσθε ετοιμοι οτι η ωρα ου δοκειτε ο υιος του ανθρωπου ερχεται ειπεν δε ο πετρος κυριε προς ημας την παραβολην ταυτην λεγεις η και προς παντας και ειπεν ο κυριος τις αρα εστιν ο πιστος οικονομος ο φρονιμος ον καταστησει ο κυριος επι της θεραπειας αυτου του διδοναι εν καιρω σιτομετριον μακαριος ο δουλος εκεινος ον ελθων ο κυριος αυτου ευρησει ποιουντα ουτως αληθως λεγω υμιν οτι επι πασιν τοις υπαρχουσιν αυτου καταστησει αυτον εαν δε ειπη ο δουλος εκεινος εν τη καρδια αυτου χρονιζει ο κυριος μου ερχεσθαι και αρξηται τυπτειν τους παιδας και τας παιδισκας εσθιειν τε και πινειν και μεθυσκεσθαι ηξει ο κυριος του δουλου εκεινου εν ημερα η ου προσδοκα και εν ωρα η ου γινωσκει και διχοτομησει αυτον και το μερος αυτου μετα των απιστων θησει εκεινος δε ο δουλος ο γνους το θελημα του κυριου αυτου και μη ετοιμασας η ποιησας προς το θελημα αυτου δαρησεται πολλας ο δε μη γνους ποιησας δε αξια πληγων δαρησεται ολιγας παντι δε ω εδοθη πολυ πολυ ζητηθησεται παρ αυτου και ω παρεθεντο πολυ περισσοτερον αιτησουσιν αυτον πυρ ηλθον βαλειν επι την γην και τι θελω ει ηδη ανηφθη βαπτισμα δε εχω βαπτισθηναι και πως συνεχομαι εως οτου τελεσθη δοκειτε οτι ειρηνην παρεγενομην δουναι εν τη γη ουχι λεγω υμιν αλλ η διαμερισμον εσονται γαρ απο του νυν πεντε εν ενι οικω διαμεμερισμενοι τρεις επι δυσιν και δυο επι τρισιν διαμερισθησονται πατηρ επι υιω και υιος επι πατρι μητηρ επι θυγατερα και θυγατηρ επι την μητερα πενθερα επι την νυμφην αυτης και νυμφη επι την πενθεραν ελεγεν δε και τοις οχλοις οταν ιδητε νεφελην ανατελλουσαν επι δυσμων ευθεως λεγετε οτι ομβρος ερχεται και γινεται ουτως και οταν νοτον πνεοντα λεγετε οτι καυσων εσται και γινεται υποκριται το προσωπον της γης και του ουρανου οιδατε δοκιμαζειν τον καιρον δε τουτον πως ουκ οιδατε δοκιμαζειν τι δε και αφ εαυτων ου κρινετε το δικαιον ως γαρ υπαγεις μετα του αντιδικου σου επ αρχοντα εν τη οδω δος εργασιαν απηλλαχθαι αυτου μηποτε κατασυρη σε προς τον κριτην και ο κριτης σε παραδωσει τω πρακτορι και ο πρακτωρ σε βαλει εις φυλακην λεγω σοι ου μη εξελθης εκειθεν εως και το εσχατον λεπτον αποδως
Luke 12 Text (Latin) Multis autem turbis circumstantibus, ita ut se invicem conculcarent, cœpit dicere ad discipulos suos : Attendite a fermento pharisæorum, quod est hypocrisis. Nihil autem opertum est, quod non reveletur : neque absconditum, quod non sciatur. Quoniam quæ in tenebris dixistis, in lumine dicentur : et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis, prædicabitur in tectis. Dico autem vobis amicis meis : Ne terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus, et post hæc non habent amplius quid faciant. Ostendam autem vobis quem timeatis : timete eum qui, postquam occiderit, habet potestatem mittere in gehennam : ita dico vobis, hunc timete. Nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipondio, et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo ? sed et capilli capitis vestri omnes numerati sunt. Nolite ergo timere : multis passeribus pluris estis vos. Dico autem vobis : Omnis quicumque confessus fuerit me coram hominibus, et Filius hominis confitebitur illum coram angelis Dei : qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabitur coram angelis Dei. Et omnis qui dicit verbum in Filium hominis, remittetur illi : ei autem qui in Spiritum Sanctum blasphemaverit, non remittetur. Cum autem inducent vos in synagogas, et ad magistratus, et potestates, nolite solliciti esse qualiter, aut quid respondeatis, aut quid dicatis. Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit vos in ipsa hora quid oporteat vos dicere. Ait autem ei quidam de turba : Magister, dic fratri meo ut dividat mecum hæreditatem. At ille dixit illi : Homo, quis me constituit judicem, aut divisorem super vos ? Dixitque ad illos : Videte, et cavete ab omni avaritia : quia non in abundantia cujusquam vita ejus est ex his quæ possidet. Dixit autem similitudinem ad illos, dicens : Hominis cujusdam divitis uberes fructus ager attulit : et cogitabat intra se dicens : Quid faciam, quia non habeo quo congregam fructus meos ? Et dixit : Hoc faciam : destruam horrea mea, et majora faciam : et illuc congregabo omnia quæ nata sunt mihi, et bona mea, et dicam animæ meæ : Anima, habes multa bona posita in annos plurimos : requiesce, comede, bibe, epulare. Dixit autem illi Deus : Stulte, hac nocte animam tuam repetunt a te : quæ autem parasti, cujus erunt ? Sic est qui sibi thesaurizat, et non est in Deum dives. Dixitque ad discipulos suos : Ideo dico vobis, nolite solliciti esse animæ vestræ quid manducetis, neque corpori quid induamini. Anima plus est quam esca, et corpus plus quam vestimentum. Considerate corvos, quia non seminant, neque metunt, quibus non est cellarium, neque horreum, et Deus pascit illos. Quanto magis vos pluris estis illis ? Quis autem vestrum cogitando potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum ? Si ergo neque quod minimum est potestis, quid de ceteris solliciti estis ? Considerate lilia quomodo crescunt : non laborant, neque nent : dico autem vobis, nec Salomon in omni gloria sua vestiebatur sicut unum ex istis. Si autem fœnum, quod hodie est in agro, et cras in clibanum mittitur, Deus sic vestit : quanto magis vos pusillæ fidei ? Luke 12 Text (KJV) In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
