- How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces is become tributary!
- She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her: All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they are become her enemies.
- Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest: all her persecutors overtook her within the straits.
- The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly; all her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh: her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.
- Her adversaries are become the head, her enemies prosper; for Yahweh has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her young children are gone into captivity before the adversary.
- From the daughter of Zion all her majesty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
- Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that were from the days of old: when her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and none did help her, The adversaries saw her, they did mock at her desolations.
- Jerusalem has grievously sinned; therefore she is become as an unclean thing; all who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yes, she sighs, and turns backward.
- Her filthiness was in her skirts; she didn't remember her latter end; therefore is she come down wonderfully; she has no comforter: see, Yahweh, my affliction; for the enemy has magnified himself.
- The adversary has spread out his hand on all her pleasant things: for she has seen that the nations are entered into her sanctuary, concerning whom you commanded that they should not enter into your assembly.
- All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for food to refresh the soul: look, Yahweh, and see; for I am become abject.
- Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there be any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, With which Yahweh has afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger.
- From on high has he sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; He has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: He has made me desolate and faint all the day.
- The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; They are knit together, they are come up on my neck; he has made my strength to fail: The Lord has delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.
- The Lord has set at nothing all my mighty men in the midst of me; He has called a solemn assembly against me to crush my young men: The Lord has trodden as in a winepress the virgin daughter of Judah.
- For these things I weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water; Because the comforter who should refresh my soul is far from me: My children are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed.
- Zion spreads forth her hands; there is none to comfort her; Yahweh has commanded concerning Jacob, that those who are around him should be his adversaries: Jerusalem is among them as an unclean thing.
- Yahweh is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: Please hear all you peoples, and see my sorrow: My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
- I called for my lovers, [but] they deceived me: My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, While they sought them food to refresh their souls.
- See, Yahweh; for I am in distress; my heart is troubled; My heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: Abroad the sword bereaves, at home there is as death.
- They have heard that I sigh; there is none to comfort me; All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it: You will bring the day that you have proclaimed, and they shall be like me.
- Let all their wickedness come before you; Do to them, as you have done to me for all my transgressions: For my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

- איכה ישבה בדד העיר רבתי עם היתה כאלמנה רבתי בגוים שרתי במדינות היתה למס׃ ס
- בכו תבכה בלילה ודמעתה על לחיה אין־לה מנחם מכל־אהביה כל־רעיה בגדו בה היו לה לאיבים׃ ס
- גלתה יהודה מעני ומרב עבדה היא ישבה בגוים לא מצאה מנוח כל־רדפיה השיגוה בין המצרים׃ ס
- דרכי ציון אבלות מבלי באי מועד כל־שעריה שוממין כהניה נאנחים בתולתיה נוגות והיא מר־לה׃ ס
- היו צריה לראש איביה שלו כי־יהוה הוגה על רב־פשעיה עולליה הלכו שבי לפני־צר׃ ס
- ויצא ־ ־ציון כל־הדרה היו שריה כאילים לא־מצאו מרעה וילכו בלא־כח לפני רודף׃ ס
- זכרה ירושלם ימי עניה ומרודיה כל מחמדיה אשר היו מימי קדם בנפל עמה ביד־צר ואין עוזר לה ראוה צרים שחקו על משבתה׃ ס
- חטא חטאה ירושלם על־כן לנידה היתה כל־מכבדיה הזילוה כי־ראו ערותה גם־היא נאנחה ותשב אחור׃ ס
- טמאתה בשוליה לא זכרה אחריתה ותרד פלאים אין מנחם לה ראה יהוה את־עניי כי הגדיל אויב׃ ס
- ידו פרש צר על כל־מחמדיה כי־ראתה גוים באו מקדשה אשר צויתה לא־יבאו בקהל לך׃ ס
- כל־עמה נאנחים מבקשים לחם נתנו באכל להשיב נפש ראה יהוה והביטה כי הייתי זוללה׃ ס
- לוא אליכם כל־עברי דרך הביטו וראו אם־יש מכאוב כמכאבי אשר עולל לי אשר הוגה יהוה ביום חרון אפו׃ ס
- ממרום שלח־אש בעצמתי וירדנה פרש רשת לרגלי השיבני אחור נתנני שממה כל־היום דוה׃ ס

- PROLOGUS. Et factum est, postquam in captivitatem redactus est Israël, et Jerusalem deserta est, sedit Jeremias propheta flens, et planxit lamentatione hac in Jerusalem : et amaro animo suspirans et ejulans, dixit : ALEPH. Quomodo sedet sola civitas plena populo ! Facta est quasi vidua domina gentium ; princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo.
- BETH. Plorans ploravit in nocte, et lacrimæ ejus in maxillis ejus : non est qui consoletur eam, et omnibus caris ejus ; omnes amici ejus spreverunt eam, et facti sunt ei inimici.
- GHIMEL. Migravit Judas propter afflictionem, et multitudinem servitutis ; habitavit inter gentes, nec invenit requiem : omnes persecutores ejus apprehenderunt eam inter angustias.
- DALETH. Viæ Sion lugent, eo quod non sint qui veniant ad solemnitatem : omnes portæ ejus destructæ, sacerdotes ejus gementes ; virgines ejus squalidæ, et ipsa oppressa amaritudine.
- HE. Facti sunt hostes ejus in capite ; inimici ejus locupletati sunt : quia Dominus locutus est super eam propter multitudinem iniquitatum ejus. Parvuli ejus ducti sunt in captivitatem ante faciem tribulantis.
- VAU. Et egressus est a filia Sion omnis decor ejus ; facti sunt principes ejus velut arietes non invenientes pascua, et abierunt absque fortitudine ante faciem subsequentis.
- ZAIN. Recordata est Jerusalem dierum afflictionis suæ, et prævaricationis, omnium desiderabilium suorum, quæ habuerat a diebus antiquis, cum caderet populus ejus in manu hostili, et non esset auxiliator : viderunt eam hostes, et deriserunt sabbata ejus.
- HETH. Peccatum peccavit Jerusalem, propterea instabilis facta est ; omnes qui glorificabant eam spreverunt illam, quia viderunt ignominiam ejus : ipsa autem gemens conversa est retrorsum.
- TETH. Sordes ejus in pedibus ejus, nec recordata est finis sui ; deposita est vehementer, non habens consolatorem. Vide, Domine, afflictionem meam, quoniam erectus est inimicus.

- MEM. De excelso misit ignem in ossibus meis, et erudivit me : expandit rete pedibus meis, convertit me retrorsum ; posuit me desolatam, tota die mœrore confectam.
- NUN. Vigilavit jugum iniquitatum mearum ; in manu ejus convolutæ sunt, et impositæ collo meo. Infirmata est virtus mea : dedit me Dominus in manu de qua non potero surgere.
- SAMECH. Abstulit omnes magnificos meos Dominus de medio mei ; vocavit adversum me tempus ut contereret electos meos. Torcular calcavit Dominus virgini filiæ Juda.
- AIN. Idcirco ego plorans, et oculus meus deducens aquas, quia longe factus est a me consolator, convertens animam meam. Facti sunt filii mei perditi, quoniam invaluit inimicus.
- PHE. Expandit Sion manus suas ; non est qui consoletur eam. Mandavit Dominus adversum Jacob in circuitu ejus hostes ejus ; facta est Jerusalem quasi polluta menstruis inter eos.
- SADE. Justus est Dominus, quia os ejus ad iracundiam provocavi. Audite, obsecro, universi populi, et videte dolorem meum : virgines meæ et juvenes mei abierunt in captivitatem.
- COPH. Vocavi amicos meos, et ipsi deceperunt me ; sacerdotes mei et senes mei in urbe consumpti sunt, quia quæsierunt cibum sibi ut refocillarent animam suam.
- RES. Vide, Domine, quoniam tribulor : conturbatus est venter meus, subversum est cor meum in memetipsa, quoniam amaritudine plena sum. Foris interfecit gladius, et domi mors similis est.
- SIN. Audierunt quia ingemisco ego, et non est qui consoletur me ; omnes inimici mei audierunt malum meum, lætati sunt quoniam tu fecisti : adduxisti diem consolationis, et fient similes mei.
