The Carthusian Order, also called the Order of Saint Bruno, is an enclosed Christian religious Roman Catholic Order founded by Saint Bruno in 1084. There exist both Carthusian monks and nuns. They follow their own Rule, called the Statutes, rather than the Rule of Benedict (as is often erroneously reported) and combine eremitical and cenobitic monastic life.

The motto of the Carthusians is "Stat crux dum volvitur orbis" meaning "The Cross is steady while the world is turning". The name 'Carthusian' is derived from Chartreuse, a French valley in the Alps which was where Saint Bruno built his first hermitage. The word 'Charterhouse', which is the English name for a Carthusian monastery, is derived from the same source.
