- Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
- David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, "Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them."
- Joab said, "May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren't they all my lord's servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?"
- Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
- Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew sword: and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew sword.
- But he didn't count Levi and Benjamin among them; for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
- God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
- David said to God, "I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly."
- Yahweh spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,
- "Go and speak to David, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh, "I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you."'"
- So Gad came to David, and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Take your choice:
- either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of Yahweh destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.'"
- David said to Gad, "I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the hand of Yahweh; for his mercies are very great. Let me not fall into the hand of man."
- So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel; and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
- God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, "It is enough; now stay your hand." The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
- David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
- David said to God, "Isn't it I who commanded the people to be numbered? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued."
- Then the angel of Yahweh commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up, and raise an altar to Yahweh in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
- David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of Yahweh.
- Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
- As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
- Then David said to Ornan, "Give me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build thereon an altar to Yahweh. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people."
- Ornan said to David, "Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all."
- King David said to Ornan, "No; but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering without cost."
- So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
- David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
- Yahweh commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into its sheath.
- At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
- For the tabernacle of Yahweh, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
- But David couldn't go before it to inquire of God; for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.

- ויעמד שטן על־ישראל ויסת את־דויד למנות את־ישראל׃
- ויאמר דויד אל־יואב ואל־שרי העם לכו ספרו את־ישראל מבאר שבע ועד־דן והביאו אלי ואדעה את־מספרם׃
- ויאמר יואב יוסף יהוה על־עמו כהם מאה פעמים הלא אדני המלך כלם לאדני לעבדים למה יבקש זאת אדני למה יהיה לאשמה לישראל׃
- ודבר־המלך חזק על־יואב ויצא יואב ויתהלך בכל־ישראל ויבא ירושלם׃
- ויתן יואב את־מספר מפקד־העם אל־דויד ויהי כל־ישראל אלף אלפים ומאה אלף איש שלף חרב ויהודה ארבע מאות ושבעים אלף איש שלף חרב׃
- ולוי ובנימן לא פקד בתוכם כי־נתעב דבר־המלך את־יואב׃
- וירע בעיני האלהים על־הדבר הזה ויך את־ישראל׃ ף
- ויאמר דויד אל־האלהים חטאתי מאד אשר עשיתי את־הדבר הזה ועתה העבר־נא את־עוון עבדך כי נסכלתי מאד׃ ף
- וידבר יהוה אל־גד חזה דויד לאמר׃
- לך ודברת אל־דויד לאמר כה אמר יהוה שלוש אני נטה עליך בחר־לך אחת מהנה ואעשה־לך׃
- ויבא גד אל־דויד ויאמר לו כה־אמר יהוה קבל־לך׃
- אם־שלוש שנים רעב ואם־שלשה חדשים נספה מפני־צריך וחרב אויבך למשגת ואם־שלשת ימים חרב יהוה ודבר בארץ ומלאך יהוה משחית בכל־גבול ישראל ועתה ראה מה־אשיב את־שלחי דבר׃ ף
- ויאמר דויד אל־גד צר־לי מאד אפלה־נא ביד־יהוה כי־רבים רחמיו מאד וביד־אדם אל־אפל׃
- ויתן יהוה דבר בישראל ויפל מישראל שבעים אלף איש׃
- וישלח האלהים מלאך לירושלם להשחיתה וכהשחית ראה יהוה וינחם על־הרעה ויאמר למלאך המשחית רב עתה הרף ידך ומלאך יהוה עמד עם־גרן ארןן היבוסי׃ ס
- וישא דויד את־עיניו וירא את־מלאך יהוה עמד בין הארץ ובין השמים וחרבו שלופה בידו נטויה על־ירושלם ויפל דויד והזקנים מכסים בשקים על־פניהם׃
- ויאמר דויד אל־האלהים הלא אני אמרתי למנות בעם ואני־הוא אשר־חטאתי והרע הרעותי ואלה הצאן מה עשו יהוה אלהי תהי נא ידך בי ובבית אבי ובעמך לא למגפה׃ ס
- ומלאך יהוה אמר אל־גד לאמר לדויד כי יעלה דויד להקים מזבח ליהוה בגרן ארןן היבסי׃
- ויעל דויד בדבר־גד אשר דבר בשם יהוה׃
- וישב ארןן וירא את־המלאך וארבעת בניו עמו מתחבאים וארןן דש חטים׃
- ויבא דויד עד־ארןן ויבט ארןן וירא את־דויד ויצא מן־הגרן וישתחו לדויד אפים ארצה׃
- ויאמר דויד אל־ארןן תנה־לי מקום הגרן ואבנה־בו מזבח ליהוה בכסף מלא תנהו לי ותעצר המגפה מעל העם׃
- ויאמר ארןן אל־דויד קח־לך ויעש אדני המלך הטוב בעיניו ראה נתתי הבקר לעלות והמורגים לעצים והחטים למנחה הכל נתתי׃
- ויאמר המלך דויד לארןן לא כי־קנה אקנה בכסף מלא כי לא־אשא אשר־לך ליהוה והעלות עולה חנם׃
- ויתן דויד לארןן במקום שקלי זהב משקל שש מאות׃
- ויבן שם דויד מזבח ליהוה ויעל עלות ושלמים ויקרא אל־יהוה ויענהו באש מן־השמים על מזבח העלה׃ ף
- ויאמר יהוה למלאך וישב חרבו אל־נדנה׃
- בעת ההיא בראות דויד כי־ענהו יהוה בגרן ארןן היבוסי ויזבח שם׃

- Consurrexit autem Satan contra Israël, et concitavit David ut numeraret Israël.
- Dixitque David ad Joab, et ad principes populi : Ite, et numerate Israël a Bersabee usque Dan : et afferte mihi numerum ut sciam.
- Responditque Joab : Augeat Dominus populum suum centuplum, quam sunt : nonne, domine mi rex, omnes servi tui sunt ? quare hoc quærit dominus meus, quod in peccatum reputetur Israëli ?
- Sed sermo regis magis prævaluit : egressusque est Joab, et circuivit universum Israël : et reversus est Jerusalem,
- deditque David numerum eorum, quos circuierat : et inventus est omnis numerus Israël, mille millia et centum millia virorum educentium gladium : de Juda autem quadringenta septuaginta millia bellatorum.
- Nam Levi et Benjamin non numeravit : eo quod Joab invitus exequeretur regis imperium.
- Displicuit autem Deo quod jussum erat : et percussit Israël.

- Et dixit David ad Gad : Ex omni parte me angustiæ premunt : sed melius mihi est, ut incidam in manus Domini, quia multæ sunt miserationes ejus, quam in manus hominum.
- Misit ergo Dominus pestilentiam in Israël : et ceciderunt de Israël septuaginta millia virorum.
- Misit quoque angelum in Jerusalem, ut percuteret eam : cumque percuteretur, vidit Dominus, et misertus est super magnitudine mali : et imperavit angelo, qui percutiebat : Sufficit, jam cesset manus tua. Porro angelus Domini stabat juxta aream Ornam Jebusæi.

- Angelus autem Domini præcepit Gad ut diceret Davidi ut ascenderet, exstrueretque altare Domino Deo in area Ornan Jebusæi.
- Ascendit ergo David juxta sermonem Gad, quem locutus ei fuerat ex nomine Domini.
- Porro Ornan cum suspexisset, et vidisset angelum, quatuorque filii ejus cum eo, absconderunt se : nam eo tempore terebat in area triticum.

- Dixit autem Ornan ad David : Tolle, et faciat dominus meus rex quodcumque ei placet : sed et boves do in holocaustum, et tribulas in ligna, et triticum in sacrificium : omnia libens præbebo.
- Dixitque ei rex David : Nequaquam ita fiet, sed argentum dabo quantum valet : neque enim tibi auferre debeo, et sic offerre Domino holocausta gratuita.

- And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
- Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
- And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
- But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
- And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
- And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
- And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

- And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
- And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
- And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
