Salvation is the word used to describe God's rescue of his people. It is especially used to describe the work of God in saving his people from sin and condemnation, resulting in forgiveness, righteousness and eternal life.

The word 'soteriology is the theological word for the study of salvation. It is derived from the Greek word soteria, which means “salvation”.

Salvation is an incredibly important Christian spiritual concept. The Bible reveals that all people need to be saved (or redeemed) from the consequences of their sin. It teaches that the only way we can receive this salvation is because of Jesus who came as the saviour for humanity, to restore people into a right relationship with God.

New Testament passages

The New Testament speaks about God's salvation for humanity as coming through Jesus, especially in Paul's writings such as the Epistle to the Romans. Some key passages in the New Testament concerning salvation include John 3:16 and Romans 5:8, both of which speak about God's incredible love for us. John 3:16 is perhaps one of the most famous Biblical verses and reads that "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."". Romans 5:8 teaches that "But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.". Romans also speaks about our evil and sin separating us from God in passages such as Romans 3:23 which states that "for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;" and Romans 5:12 which states that "Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned."

According to the New Testament, Jesus paid this penalty of death for our sins so that we could receive eternal life. Romans 6:23 is an important verse that speaks about this, stating "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Passages like Romans 10:9-14, it is through turning from these sins and believing in Jesus that we receive this gift of eternal life, stating "that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. For, "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.""
