Commentary
Mark 1:9 very briefly records the baptism of Jesus. Various explanations are suggested as to why Jesus was baptized. Matthew 3:15 records the reason Jesus gave for his baptism, that is, "to fulfil all righteousness". Matt Slick has explained this in terms of Jesus' entry into priesthood so that he could rightfully be the sacrifice for the sins of humanity[1]. The church father Ambrose explained the baptism of Jesus as something that occurred not because Jesus needed the forgiveness of sins but rather to sanctify (i.e. make holy) the water.
