At the centre of Christianity is a creative God who made all things. The book of Genesis tells us that humans have been created by God, in his image. It also tells us that everything God made was good. But because of human rebellion to God, this good creation has been spoiled. God is working today to make a new creation.

Creation science, intelligent design and evolution

Although all Christians believe that all things have been created by God, there are differences in opinion regarding when and how the world was created.

Some Christians believe in the literal 6-day creation account of Genesis and mark the universe as 6,000 years old. Other Christians believe the account of Genesis 1 literally, but say the time-frames are not known. And some believe that the stories of Genesis should not be taken literally, but instead are symbols or representations of why the world is the way it is.

Creation science is the theory that attempts to offer scientific evidence compatible with creation according to Genesis. Intelligent design is the assertion that certain features of the universe and of living things exhibit the characteristics of a product resulting from an intelligent agent (God), as opposed to an unguided process.

Evolution is the theory that all living creatures acquire and pass on new traits from generation to generation, affecting the overall makeup of the population and even leading to the emergence of new species - the theory states that evolution occurs because a heritable trait that increases an individual's chance of successfully reproducing will become more common, by inheritance, from one generation to the next, and likewise a heritable trait that decreases an individual's chance of reproducing will become rarer - this is natural selection and survival of the fittest.

Main themes in Genesis 1

Genesis 1 is the first chapter of the first book of the Bible. It gives an account of creation - its major theme is that God created everything. It also reveals that God created humans in his image.

Some of the important teachings of Genesis 1 include

  • One God only created everything by his word - for example Genesis 1:3
  • God created man (male and female) in his image - Genesis 1:27
  • God as creator has rightful authority over all things - and he gives authority to man under him - Genesis 1:28-29
  • God's creation was good
  • There is structure and order to God's creation in Genesis
  • The final plan for creation was rest
