- Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
- He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.
- Nevertheless he held to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; he didn't depart from it.
- Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he rendered to the king of Israel the wool of one hundred thousand lambs, and of one hundred thousand rams.
- But it happened, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
- King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.
- He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?" He said, "I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."
- He said, "Which way shall we go up?" He answered, "The way of the wilderness of Edom."
- So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey. There was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them.
- The king of Israel said, "Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."
- But Jehoshaphat said, "Isn't there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?" One of the king of Israel's servants answered, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah."
- Jehoshaphat said, "The word of Yahweh is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
- Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother." The king of Israel said to him, "No; for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."
- Elisha said, "As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.
- But now bring me a minstrel." It happened, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Yahweh came on him.
- He said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Make this valley full of trenches.'
- For thus says Yahweh, 'You will not see wind, neither will you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your animals.
- This is but a light thing in the sight of Yahweh. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
- You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.'"
- It happened in the morning, about the time of offering the offering, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
- Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.
- They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood.
- They said, "This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!"
- When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.
- They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the springs of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth [only] they left its stones; however the men armed with slings went about it, and struck it.
- When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.
- Then he took his eldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

- ויהורם בן־אחאב מלך על־ישראל בשמרון בשנת שמנה עשרה ליהושפט מלך יהודה וימלך שתים־עשרה שנה׃
- ויעשה הרע בעיני יהוה רק לא כאביו וכאמו ויסר את־מצבת הבעל אשר עשה אביו׃
- רק בחטאות ירבעם בן־נבט אשר־החטיא את־ישראל דבק לא־סר ממנה׃ ס
- ומישע מלך־מואב היה נקד והשיב למלך־ישראל מאה־אלף כרים ומאה אלף אילים צמר׃
- ויהי כמות אחאב ויפשע מלך־מואב במלך ישראל׃
- ויצא המלך יהורם ביום ההוא משמרון ויפקד את־כל־ישראל׃
- וילך וישלח אל־יהושפט מלך־יהודה לאמר מלך מואב פשע בי התלך אתי אל־מואב למלחמה ויאמר אעלה כמוני כמוך כעמי כעמך כסוסי כסוסיך׃
- ויאמר אי־זה הדרך נעלה ויאמר דרך מדבר אדום׃
- וילך מלך ישראל ומלך־יהודה ומלך אדום ויסבו דרך שבעת ימים ולא־היה מים למחנה ולבהמה אשר ברגליהם׃
- ויאמר מלך ישראל אהה כי־קרא יהוה לשלשת המלכים האלה לתת אותם ביד־מואב׃
- ויאמר יהושפט האין פה נביא ליהוה ונדרשה את־יהוה מאותו ויען אחד מעבדי מלך־ישראל ויאמר פה אלישע בן־שפט אשר־יצק מים על־ידי אליהו׃
- ויאמר יהושפט יש אותו דבר־יהוה וירדו אליו מלך ישראל ויהושפט ומלך אדום׃
- ויאמר אלישע אל־מלך ישראל מה־לי ולך לך אל־נביאי אביך ואל־נביאי אמך ויאמר לו מלך ישראל אל כי־קרא יהוה לשלשת המלכים האלה לתת אותם ביד־מואב׃
- ויאמר אלישע חי־יהוה צבאות אשר עמדתי לפניו כי לולי פני יהושפט מלך־יהודה אני נשא אם־אביט אליך ואם־אראך׃
- ועתה קחו־לי מנגן והיה כנגן המנגן ותהי עליו יד־יהוה׃
- ויאמר כה אמר יהוה עשה הנחל הזה גבים גבים׃
- כי־כה אמר יהוה לא־תראו רוח ולא־תראו גשם והנחל ההוא ימלא מים ושתיתם אתם ומקניכם ובהמתכם׃
- ונקל זאת בעיני יהוה ונתן את־מואב בידכם׃
- והכיתם כל־עיר מבצר וכל־עיר מבחור וכל־עץ טוב תפילו וכל־מעיני־מים תסתמו וכל החלקה הטובה תכאבו באבנים׃
- ויהי בבקר כעלות המנחה והנה־מים באים מדרך אדום ותמלא הארץ את־המים׃
- וכל־מואב שמעו כי־עלו המלכים להלחם בם ויצעקו מכל חגר חגרה ומעלה ויעמדו על־הגבול׃
- וישכימו בבקר והשמש זרחה על־המים ויראו מואב מנגד את־המים אדמים כדם׃
- ויאמרו דם זה החרב נחרבו המלכים ויכו איש את־רעהו ועתה לשלל מואב׃
- ויבאו אל־מחנה ישראל ויקמו ישראל ויכו את־מואב וינסו מפניהם ־בה והכות את־מואב׃
- והערים יהרסו וכל־חלקה טובה ישליכו איש־אבנו ומלאוה וכל־מעין־מים יסתמו וכל־עץ־טוב יפילו עד־השאיר אבניה בקיר חרשת ויסבו הקלעים ויכוה׃
- וירא מלך מואב כי־חזק ממנו המלחמה ויקח אותו שבע־מאות איש שלף חרב להבקיע אל־מלך אדום ולא יכלו׃
- ויקח את־בנו הבכור אשר־ימלך תחתיו ויעלהו עלה על־החמה ויהי קצף־גדול על־ישראל ויסעו מעליו וישבו לארץ׃ ף

- Joram vero filius Achab regnavit super Israël in Samaria anno decimo octavo Josaphat regis Judæ. Regnavitque duodecim annis.
- Et fecit malum coram Domino, sed non sicut pater suus et mater : tulit enim statuas Baal, quas fecerat pater ejus.
- Verumtamen in peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israël, adhæsit, nec recessit ab eis.
- Porro Mesa rex Moab nutriebat pecora multa, et solvebat regi Israël centum millia agnorum, et centum millia arietum cum velleribus suis.
- Cumque mortuus fuisset Achab, prævaricatus est fœdus, quod habebat cum rege Israël.
- Egressus est igitur rex Joram in die illa de Samaria, et recensuit universum Israël.
- Misitque ad Josaphat regem Juda, dicens : Rex Moab recessit a me, veni mecum contra eum ad prælium. Qui respondit : Ascendam : qui meus est, tuus est : populus meus, populus tuus : et equi mei, equi tui.
- Dixitque : Per quam viam ascendemus ? At ille respondit : Per desertum Idumææ.
- Perrexerunt igitur rex Israël, et rex Juda, et rex Edom, et circuierunt per viam septem dierum, nec erat aqua exercitui, et jumentis quæ sequebantur eos.
- Dixitque rex Israël : Heu heu heu, congregavit nos Dominus tres reges, ut traderet in manus Moab.
- Et ait Josaphat : Estne hic propheta Domini, ut deprecemur Dominum per eum ? Et respondit unus de servis regis Israël : Est hic Eliseus filius Saphat, qui fundebat aquam super manus Eliæ.
- Et ait Josaphat : Est apud eum sermo Domini. Descenditque ad eum rex Israël, et Josaphat rex Juda, et rex Edom.
- Dixit autem Eliseus ad regem Israël : Quid mihi et tibi est ? Vade ad prophetas patris tui, et matris tuæ. Et ait illi rex Israël : Quare congregavit Dominus tres reges hos, ut traderet eos in manus Moab ?
- Dixitque ad eum Eliseus : Vivit Dominus exercituum, in cujus conspectu sto, quod si non vultum Josaphat regis Judæ erubescerem, non attendissem quidem te, nec respexissem.
- Nunc autem adducite mihi psaltem. Cumque caneret psaltes, facta est super eum manus Domini, et ait :
- Hæc dicit Dominus : Facite alveum torrentis hujus fossas et fossas.
- Hæc enim dicit Dominus : Non videbitis ventum, neque pluviam : et alveus iste replebitur aquis, et bibetis vos, et familiæ vestræ, et jumenta vestra.
- Parumque est hoc in conspectu Domini : insuper tradet etiam Moab in manus vestras.
- Et percutietis omnem civitatem munitam, et omnem urbem electam, et universum lignum fructiferum succidetis, cunctosque fontes aquarum obturabitis, et omnem agrum egregium operietis lapidibus.
- Factum est igitur mane, quando sacrificium offerri solet, et ecce, aquæ veniebant per viam Edom, et repleta est terra aquis.
- Universi autem Moabitæ audientes quod ascendissent reges ut pugnarent adversum eos, convocaverunt omnes qui accincti erant balteo desuper, et steterunt in terminis.
- Primoque mane surgentes, et orto jam sole ex adverso aquarum, viderunt Moabitæ econtra aquas rubras quasi sanguinem,
- dixeruntque : Sanguis gladii est : pugnaverunt reges contra se, et cæsi sunt mutuo : nunc perge ad prædam Moab.
- Perrexeruntque in castra Israël : porro consurgens Israël, percussit Moab : at illi fugerunt coram eis. Venerunt igitur qui vicerant, et percusserunt Moab,
- et civitates destruxerunt : et omnem agrum optimum, mittentes singuli lapides, repleverunt : et universos fontes aquarum obturaverunt : et omnia ligna fructifera succiderunt, ita ut muri tantum fictiles remanerent : et circumdata est civitas a fundibulariis, et magna ex parte percussa.
- Quod cum vidisset rex Moab, prævaluisse scilicet hostes, tulit secum septingentos viros educentes gladium, ut irrumperent ad regem Edom : et non potuerunt.

- And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
- Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
- And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
- But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
- And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
- And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
- And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
- So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
