The term "Year of Three Popes" is used to apply to any year of which three separate popes reigned during a single year.

The most recent 'year of three popes' was 1978, in which Pope Paul VI ruled until August, Pope John Paul I ruled from August until September, and Pope John Paul II reigned starting in October and 1978 finished with him as the Pope.
