Commentary
John 11 tells the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. He was a close friend of Jesus who lived in Bethany.
The story begins with the sisters Martha and Mary sending news of his illness ot Jesus, but Jesus, knowing of Lazarus' death, waiting a number of days before going to visit. On meeting Jesus, Martha weeping to Jesus says that if only Jesus had arrived earlier, her brother would not have died. Jesus responds with the famous line in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life...". The story climaxes with the Jesus calling Lazarus out of the tomb, and Lazarus walking out, alive!
The story also contains the shortest verse, "Jesus wept" - John 11:35.
Following the miracle, many Jews were convinced of Jesus' divinity after visiting Lazarus. No more is said about of Lazarus himself.
The miracle, the longest coherent narrative in John aside from the Passion, is the climax of John's "signs" and leads directly to the decision of Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin to kill Jesus. Caiaphas utters the prophetics words "It is better one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation perish" (John 11:50)
