:In the bleak midwinter, frost wind made moan,
As with gladness men of old
Did the guiding star behold;
As with joy they hailed its light,
Leading onward, beaming bright,
So, most gracious Lord, may we
Evermore be led by Thee!

As with joyful steps they sped,
Saviour, to Thy lowly bed,
There to bend the knee before
Thee whom heaven and earth adore,
Ever seek Thy mercy-seat!
As they offered gifts most rare
At Thy cradle, rude and bare,
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to Thee, our heavenly King!
Keep us in the narrow way;
And when earthly things are past.
Bring our ransomed souls at last
As with joyful steps they sped,
Saviour, to Thy lowly bed,
There to bend the knee before
Thee whom heaven and earth adore,
So may we with willing feet
Ever seek Thy mercy-seat!

As they offered gifts most rare
At Thy cradle, rude and bare,
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin's alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to Thee, our heavenly King!

Holy Jesus, every day
Keep us in the narrow way;
And when earthly things are past.
Bring our ransomed souls at last
Where they need no star to guide,
Where no clouds Thy glory hide.

In the heavenly country bright
Need they no created light;
Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown,
Thou its Sun which goes not down.
:It came upon the midnight clear,
:That glorious song of old,
:From angels bending near the earth,
:To touch their harps of gold;
:“Peace on the earth, good will to men,
:From Heaven’s all gracious King.”
:The world in solemn stillness lay,
:To hear the angels sing.

:Still through the cloven skies they come
:With peaceful wings unfurled,
:And still their heavenly music floats
:O’er all the weary world;
:Above its sad and lowly plains,
:They bend on hovering wing,
:And ever over its Babel sounds
:The blessèd angels sing.

:Yet with the woes of sin and strife
:The world has suffered long;
:Beneath the angel strain have rolled
:Two thousand years of wrong;
:And man, at war with man, hears not
:The love-song which they bring;
:O hush the noise, ye men of strife
:And hear the angels sing.

:And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
:Whose forms are bending low,
:Who toil along the climbing way
:With painful steps and slow,
:Look now! for glad and golden hours
:Come swiftly on the wing.
:O rest beside the weary road,
:And hear the angels sing!

:For lo! the days are hastening on,
:By prophet-bards foretold,
:When with the ever circling years
:Comes round the age of gold;
:When peace shall over all the earth
:Its ancient splendours fling,
:And the whole world send back the song
:Which now the angels sing.
Angels from the realms of glory
Wing your flight over all the earth

Ye who sang creation's story
Worship Christ the newborn king

Shepherds in the field abiding

Watching over your flocks by night

God with man is now residing
Yonder shines the infant light
"A great and mighty wonder" is a very ancient hymn with music dating back to the 16th century and words going back top the 8th century. It thus acts to demonstrate the enduring importance of Christmas in the Christian calendar.

Music: Es Ist Ein Ros’, Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesäng (Köln, Germany: 1599); harmony by Michael Praetorius, 1609

Lyrics: Words: St. Germanus, 734 (Μέγα χαί παράδοξον θαυμα); translated from Greek to English by John M. Neale, 1862.

Lyrics
A great and mighty wonder, a full and holy cure:

The virgin bears the Infant with virgin honour pure!

Repeat the hymn again: “To God on high be glory

And peace on earth to men!”

The Word becomes incarnate and yet remains on high,

And cherubim sing anthems to shepherds from the sky.

Repeat the hymn again: “To God on high be glory

And peace on earth to men!”

While thus they sing your Monarch, those bright angelic bands,

Rejoice, ye vales and mountains, ye oceans, clap your hands.

Repeat the hymn again: “To God on high be glory

And peace on earth to men!”

Since all He comes to ransom, by all be He adored,

The Infant born in Bethl’em, the Saviour and the Lord.

Repeat the hymn again: “To God on high be glory

And peace on earth to men!”

And idol forms shall perish, and error shall decay,

And Christ shall wield His sceptre, our Lord and God for aye.

Repeat the hymn again: “To God on high be glory

And peace on earth to men!”

Jesus shall reign where'er the sun is a hymn with verses from the poem by Isaac Watts (1674 - 1748) and generally sung to the tune Truro first published in Psalmodia Evangelica (1789).

Lyrics
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
Does his successive journeys run;
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on His love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His Name.

Blessings abound wherever He reigns;
The prisoner leaps to lose his chains;
The weary find eternal rest,
And all the sons of want are blessed.

Let every creature rise and bring
Peculiar honors to our King;
Angels descend with songs again,
And earth repeat the loud amen!

O God, Our Help in Ages Past is a hymn by Isaac Watts and paraphrases Psalm 90. It originally consisted of nine stanzas. In present usage, however, the hymn is usually limited to stanzas one, two, three, five and nine. In 1738, John Wesley in his hymnal, Psalms and Hymns, changed the first line of the text from "Our God" to "O God."

The hymn was originally part of The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, published by Watts in 1719. In this book he paraphrased in Christian verse the entire psalter with the exception of twelve Psalms which he felt were unsuited for Christian usage.

The hymn is often sung at festive occasions in England.

The hymn tune "St. Anne" (CM 86.86) to which the text is most often sung was composed by William Croft in 1708. It first appeared anonymously in the Supplement to the New Version of the Psalms, 6th edition in 1708.

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne

Thy saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Thine arm alone,

And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,

Or earth received her frame,

From everlasting Thou art God,

To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight

Are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night

Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever rolling stream,

Bears all its sons away;

They fly, forgotten, as a dream

Dies at the opening day.

Our God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be Thou our guard while troubles last,

And our eternal home.

Silent Night is a traditional Christmas carol. The original lyrics of the song Stille Nacht were written in German by Josef Mohr and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz X. Gruber. The carol has been translated into over 300 languages around the world, and it is one of the most popular carols of all time.

Words
Silent night, holy night

All is quiet, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace

Sleep in heavenly peace

German words
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!

Alles schläft, einsam wacht

Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.

Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,

Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh,

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,

Hirten erst kundgemacht

Durch der Engel Hallelujah,

Tönt es laut von fern und nah,

Christ, der Retter ist da,

Christ, der Retter ist da!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,

Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht

Lieb aus Deinem göttlichen Mund,

A great and mighty wonder is a very ancient hymn with music dating back to the 16th century and words going back top the 8th Century, demonstrating the enduring importance of Christmas in the Christian calendar.
