SEX BIAS INFLUENCES TRANSLATORS.
616. It is well known that when a man gets lost on the prairie, he begins to go round in a circle; it is suggested that one side (the right, generally), being stronger than the other, he pulls unconsciously with greater strength upon the corresponding guiding rein of his horse. Just so does the translator; he pulls unconsciously on the strong side of preconception or self-interest. This may not be intended, but it is none the less inevitable to the uninspired hand. For this reason, neither class nor sex should have an exclusive right to set forth the meaning of the original text. It is notorious that the Samaritan Hebrew text, even, has been manipulated to a considerable extent to suit the Samaritan prejudices, so that that manuscript must be corrected by comparison with others before it can be trusted on points that involve Samaritan interests. The Alexandrian, or Septuagint version, shows traces of an attempt to meet the prejudices of Egyptians. What wonder that all versions, having for all time been made by men, should disclose the fact that, on the woman question, they all travel more or less in a circle, in accordance with sex bias, hindering the freedom and progress of women, since (in times past more than at present), the self interest of man led him to suppose that woman served God best as his own undeveloped subordinate?

617. Let us first note two cases, brought to light by the Revision Committee, by way of illustration of sex bias. In Genesis 20, we read the story of the exposure of Sarah, at Abraham’s request, in Abimelech’s harem (?). When the king discovered that she was a married woman (through the reproof of God), he sent for Abraham, reproved him, and then paid a thousand pieces of silver to him for the injury done her good name. The version of 1611 (A.V.) and the version of 1884 construe the language spoken by the king on this occasion quite differently.
<blockquote>
A.V. ¾“He is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee;”
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
R.V.¾ “It[3] is to thee for a covering of the eyes, to all that are with thee;”
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
A.V. ¾ “and with all other: thus she was reproved;”
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
R.V.¾ “and in respect of all thou are righted;”
</blockquote>
Abimelech did this so that all would understand that the wrong was his not Sarah’s; and she would be righted before all and ashamed before none, and would not need to cover her eyes (face) for shame. So the R.V.indicates; but the A.V. makes the blame fall upon Sarah, who is “reproved.” Abraham was no “covering to her eyes,”¾he was the primal cause of her shame and humiliation. It would seem as though the rendering of the A.V. was an attempt to fortify the supposed teaching of Paul that women should go veiled.

618. Another passage, bound to be corrected apace with the improvement of woman’s social position, is Leviticus 19:20. This relates to wrong relations with a female slave, who is, “not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her.” The R.V.shows progress here toward the light, which is yet obscured, however. The A.V. says:¾She shall be scourged . . . and he shall bring his offering.” The R.V.says: “They shall be punished . . . and he shall bring,” etc. But the literal sense is, “There shall be inquisition . . . and he shall bring.” That is, there shall be rigid inquiry made, and when it is ascertained that she is not in a state of freedom at all, then only he shall bring the offering.[2]

619. Luther once said: “No gown worse becomes a woman than to be wise.” Luther only held the prevailing views of his day as regards women. Such men could not easily perceive when Scripture expressed a different thought on the subject. Proverbs 14:1 says, in Hebrew, “The wisdom of woman buildeth her house,” but not being able to appreciate the advantages of female education, men rendered it: “Every wise woman buildeth her house,” that is, the woman who devotes herself to housewifely duties is pronounced “wise.” But this is not the thought; rather, wisdom itself, in woman, will build her own (not her husband’s) house,¾ elevate her to a place of honor. Every time there has been an opportunity for the use of option in translation, use has been made of that option, by this or that man of learning, to build up one sex and to depreciate the other, and so the result, through the ages, has been cumulative, and that without actual intention.

620. Again, Cha-kam HEB “wise,” occurs (on a hasty count) 130 times in the Hebrew Bible. It is invariably translated “wise” excepting in the following places: in 2 Samuel 13:3 “subtil;” and in 10 instances “cunning,” when used of skilful workmen, 1 Chronicles 22:15; 2 Chronicles 2:7 (twice); 13, and 14 (twice); Isaiah 3:3; 40:20; Jeremiah 10:9. But in Jeremiah 9:17 we read in our English, “Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women that they may come, and let them make hast and take up a wailing for us,” etc. The reference is to the low moral tone prevailing at Jerusalem, which threatened the overthrow of the city. Now here, surely, there is no reference to skilful workmanship on the part of women, and moreover the A.V. leaves out the rather important article “the”¾see R.V.Here “the wise women” are called upon by Jehovah to show their interest and concern in matters of State,¾the moral corruptness of the city; and “the wise women” are further instructed to teach their daughters to be concerned about such matters,¾verse 20. Huldah (2 Kings. 22:14), admittedly the wisest prophet of the times, may have been still living at this very time.

621. I think we find another case of prejudiced translation in Isaiah 3:12. The word translated “children” in this verse in Isaiah, is a plural masculine participle of the verb “to glean,” “abuse,” “practice.” It is translated “glean” in Leviticus 19:10, Deuteronomy 24:21, Judges 20:45, and Jeremiah 6:9. The word has no translation such as “children” anywhere else in the Bible, and it occurs 21 times. Another word altogether is used for “children,” and “child,” in verses 4 and 5 of this same chapter; the sense seems to have been fixed by the supposed context, to correspond with “women.” As to the word translated “women”: Two words, without the rabbinical vowel “points,” are exactly alike. One is pronounced nosh-im and the other na-shim. In appearance the only difference is a slight mark under the first letter of the Hebrew word na-shim. The first word means “exactors;” the one with a vowel mark under the initial letter means “women.” The entire decision, therefore, as to whether the word means one or the other depends upon OPTION. Those who pointed the word, evidently thought the nation could sink no lower than to pass under women rulers, and then translated the word “children” to match it. Commentators frequently call attention to the alternate reading. See Adam Clarke on the passage. The Septuagint translates: “As for my people, tax-gatherers (praktores) glean them, and exactors (apaitountes) rule over them.”

622. There seems little in the context to support the translation “children” and “women.” But study the context as regards the other reading. After complaining of the “gleaners,” (that is, “tax-gatherers”) and “extortioners,” they are threatened in the following language: “The Lord standeth up to plead and standeth up to judge the people. The Lord will enter into judgement with the elders of His people, and the princes (“rulers,” masculine, not feminine gender), thereof for ye have eaten up the vineyard (the conduct of extortionate tax-gatherers), and the spoil of the poor is in your houses. What mean ye that ye crush (R. V.) my people, and grind the faces of the poor?” Because of this context, we believe that OPTION took the wrong turn when it decided to translate this verse as it stands in our English version; and that this translation would have had a strong showing up of its sophistries, had educated women been on the last Revision Committee.

These instances are trivial, when taken one by one, but many straws floating in one direction prove that the current runs that way strongly.

<center>(To be continued.)</center>
Footnotes
[1] Hebrew has no word for “it,” which must be represented by either “he” or “she.”
[2] “Your opinion that the sentence, ‘they shall be punished’ of the R.V.is erroneous, is in my judgement very correct. You should, however, add that the Syriac Version has . . . (Syriac words) which means precisely, ‘there shall be inquisition.’ ”

69.250.40.75 (Tom Major): God's Word to Women Lesson 52 moved to God's Word to Women Lesson 52 SUCKS

WHAT IS MEEKNESS?
396. Meekness has nothing whatever to do with the vices, cowardice and weakness. No one can be meek who is not of royal blood; hence the quality is little understood, and, for the most part, confounding it with weakness, it is taught to women and children and slaves, and despised in men. As truly as our humility has its source in our attitude towards GOD ALONE, so has the virtue of meekness. The first means loyalty to God ALONE as alone to be obeyed; the second means Loyalty to GOD ALONE, as our Judge and King.

397. To be humble and obey God alone will surely bring tribulation to any human being, sooner or later. It is only a question of time, and we will discover that some human law contravenes God’s laws. We are often told that the days of persecution are past and ended. But why have they ended? Because man has concluded to accept man’s laws as God’s whole will for him. He argues that the laws of his country must be accorded unquestioning obedience; that the laws of a husband must be met by unquestioning obedience by the wife; but it is as true to-day as it ever was that “traditions,” i.e., man-made laws, ever “make void the commandments of God” at all inconvenient points, and it ever will be so.

398. Let a man or woman determine to wholly follow the Lord, and trouble brews for that person, and such will either get into tribulation, or affect a compromise to escape it. Now let us imagine such an one, who, like his Lord, gives uncompromising testimony, by word and deed, against all sham customs and wicket human legislation. Trouble follows, and now comes the opportunity for meekness. As the man determined to obey God ALONE, now must he allow God ALONE to defend him and avenge his wrongs, growing out of his obedience and loyalty. If the man do this, he is meek; if he turn to human means of defense or vengeance, he is not meek. Only those who know the King as Father, and have royal blood in their veins, are sufficiently “highborn” (because born of God) to endure the test. For this reason meekness is that one virtue which has little reward until the Millennial Age, excepting inward rest. (Matthew 11:29).

399. What means that silence of Jesus before human potentates? “Jesus held His peace,” is the record of His conduct before the Sanhedrin, Matt. 26:63. Yet He did answer at one point¾when He testified that He was the Christ, the Son of God (v. 64). A little later, Pilate asks Him, “Art thou the King of the Jews?” and He answers with a strong affirmative, but no other questions (Mark 15:2-5). Later, Jesus stands before Herod: “He questioned Him in many words; but He answered him nothing,” Luke 23:9. On one point He gives clear testimony, namely, He is the lawful King of the Jews, and the Son of the King of Kings; but He gives no testimony against His persecutors, nor in His own defense. His case has already been submitted to the Supremest Court of adjudication, and it is not within their power (John 19:11).

400. To Him there was but one kingdom, His Father’s. His royal blood, and sojourn in a land of which He was not a citizen, forbade His submitting His case to their courts. Not that He was antagonistic to human laws, executed by human rulers, for the children of the heavenly King,¾certainly not for the only begotten Son of that King. His royal blood was not to be overlooked.

Now does this conduct on His part show weakness or strength of character? There can be but one answer. This loyalty to a Royal Father on the part of Jesus Christ, both in His obedience to God alone, and appeal to God alone, is His crown of humility and meekness. Isaiah described it in the words, “As a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth” (53:7). This meekness is displayed in the conduct of Moses, in that incident which sets him forth as meek above all the men upon the face of the earth,” Here we have, as Dr. Lange has said, “An intimation that he endured in silence and committed his justification to God.” And God at once took up Moses’ defense (Numbers 12).

401. As Christ’s conduct in the court of human potentates, so was His manner towards common men: “Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him [God] that judgeth righteously,” 1 Peter 2:23. He recognized but one King; He knew but one Judge; He knew but one Enforcer of law, just as He knew but one law (the Word of God) to be enforced; and God was His own interpreter and enforcer of His law.

402. It requires the utmost balance of Christian character to maintain such an attitude as this towards God and towards man; on the one hand, towards the Christian’s King; on the other, towards the rule founded upon military power for this world. The Apostles tell us, “Submit yourselves . . . to the king . . . unto governors,” (1 Peter 2:13, 14;) “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers,” and “Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers” (Romans 13:1; Titus 3:1). Christ enforced the same lesson, Matthew 5:41, by saying that when compelled to go one mile we must be ready to go two; if sued at court and forced to give his coat to an oppressor, the oppressed must not retaliate, but give his overcoat also. To do this for love’s sake, for harmony’s sake and for Christ’s sake, and yet to recognize always the limitations that God’s law place upon man-made laws, and obey first the higher law,¾this is a narrow path to tread. And yet we know He trod it. We must follow in His footsteps.

403. He was questioned once in order to determine His attitude towards human governments, and He disclosed it at once. He merely drew a dividing line, as it were, between what is honest and what is dishonest; “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:15-22). For the privilege of using Caesar’s money, without which they could not purchase the necessaries of life, pay an equivalent to Caesar, and no more.[1] But let that sense of obligation cease when Caesar is paid; and let the recognition of that debt involve no disloyalty to the ONE KING¾GOD, in whose image we stand, in Christ Jesus. No dynamite of human invention can ever embosom within itself such revolutionary powers as “meekness” such as this. An intangible spiritual force, it is utterly baffling to crude cannon and rifle of human government, while it always puts the enemy in the wrong, even in his own estimation. Unregenerate man is always an angered and malicious coward in the presence of such a virtue. No wonder the Bible assures us that “the meek shall inherit the earth,” in the age to come.

404. No fear but God will “avenge His own elect” who trust Him to right their wrongs. Christ so trusted, while His enemies cried. “His blood be upon us, and upon our children.” And so it was, one of their own Jewish historians being the witness. Josephus tell us that within less than forty years after Christ’s death, the streets of Jerusalem, in siege, were impassable by reason of the dead, while the palaces of Jerusalem were packed from floor to ceiling with corpses. At the same time, as many Jews hung on crosses outside the city, as wood could be found on which to impale them. What wonder that, seeing the approaching avenging of His innocent death, Jesus prayed for His tormentors, and wept over the doomed city, crying, “O that thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things that belong unto thy peace?” (Luke 19:42, R. V.).

Footnote
[1] The earliest Christians refused absolutely to fight for Rome. A Lutheran pastor has lately expressed what amount of compensation the Kaiser requires of his subjects, in these words: “The crime of the nation against the individual, is not that it demands his sacrifices against his will, but that it claims a life of eternal significance for ends that have no eternal value.”

F2(no3)                    C2(no3)
Guarded and cynical now, can't help but wondering how

Directory Listing of Churches
Please visit the Directory listing of churches around the world and add your church into the database. It would be a wonderful and remarkable thing if WikiChristian could have a listing of all the churches in the world with a short description of the church making a note of the service times and the address. For example, the church I go to is St Matthew's and St Bart's Anglican Churches in Adelaide, South Australia, which can be reached by following: Churches in Australasia and the Pacific islands -> Churches in Australia -> Churches in South Australia -> Churches in Adelaide and its suburbs. So, if your a regular attender of a church, why not add it to the database? --Graham grove 09:54, 19 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Making it easier to navigate the list...
I've been thinking that this list of churches, although useful, is to hard to navigate. There are just more clicks than are necessary to get where one wants to go. I will start developing a some easier system that involves just the use of a single page... e.g. the Directory listing page. If any one has any suggestions, please mention them here... --Ymmotrojam 21:16, 26 January 2006 (EST)

In brief: Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It is a book of beginnings - the beginning of the universe and how people spoiled it, and the beginning of God's plan to restore it through the beginning of a nation. It tells us about God, who was before time, and is the creator of everything there is. Genesis tells us that God created Adam and Eve in his image, but that they spoiled this creation, by wilful disobedience, bringing death to mankind. The book tells the stories of early humans including Noah and the Flood and Abraham and his descendents.

In brief: The updated KJV is an update of archaic words and certain expressions in the Authorized King James Version. This is done using software known only as the “Translator”. The program searches the entire text of the KJV and replaces words that are archaic and old expressions taken from a special dictionary. This dictionary contains words that are selected by ‘contextual’ comparison that are done manually by examining the original Hebrew/Greek words in the Strong’s concordance.
There are no active Talk pages related to the translation projects or guidelines for translation. There are 4 versions that could be edited. I just found a whole chapter of Jude displaced in the ASV and tried to correct it and was successful. My thoughts are to focus on one book and only open up three verses at a time for translation and when the concensus is reached the accumulation of verses would be locked, then three more for edit, etc. When the USV is opened up with all the empty links, the enormity of the task is somewhat daunting. I have found only one person editing in the WEB version, better to start small. I can setup the Book of John as outlined. Also, found no Greek characters in WikiChristian software. The term was coined by critics, who objected to the practice of performing baptism for adults whose previous baptism, as infants, the Anabaptists claimed was not valid.

The history of Christian wikis is much more recent than that of wikis in general. A wiki website is a site that allows users to add content, as on an internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content.

Wikipedia, with hundreds-of-thousands of articles, is the most well-known wiki website and is a testimony to the effectiveness of wikis in allowing exchange of information through collaborative effort. It contains thousands of articles related to religion. One of the criticisms that adherents to various religious groups have however is that in attempting to maintain a neutral point of view, some of the teachings of their religion can be "watered-down" or altered. These critics also state that the neutral point of view is in the eye of the beholder. In response to some of these criticism, explicitly Christian wiki websites have been set up. The majority of them adhere to a specific Christian denomination or tradition, including most that claim to be non-specifically "Christian" in nature. They tend to fall into three categories, Online Bible encyclopedias (of varying completeness and denominational emphases), general Christianity wikis without a specific denominational slant, and wikis devoted to a specific Christian denomination or tradition.

Combining our efforts?
It appears that there are multiple, slightly different, but similar wikis to do with different Christian aspects. They include WikiChristian, WikiBible, Wikible, Theopedia, Carmpedia, Compass and so on. A reasonably full list with links can be found at About Christian Wikis.

It seems to me that each wiki has 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 dedicated users, which isn't really that many. If there was some way we could all agree to become involved in one Chrisitan wiki, either by all joining forces and working on one of the above listed wikis, or by restarting and creating a new wiki, then perhaps we could create a really comprehensive and useful and most importantly, a used wiki for Christianity. What do you think? If you wish to comment, post your comments here. --Graham grove 10:29, 27 Dec 2005 (EST)

:Theopedia contacted CARMpedia (when it began) about combining efforts since there seemed to be considerable commonality in perspective. There was no interest from CARMpedia in doing so at that time. Theopedia has a significant amount of content and invites participation -- however, a preference for the Protestant (Reformed) perspective will likely keep Theopedia as a separate wiki. Respectfully, Gomarus at Theopedia, 65.168.235.36 20:44, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

::Good point. A way around that however would be to have wiki that can cover all view points, however individual articles within it could be specific to a particular perspective - for example, you could write an article on Salvation (Reformed view) under the main article Salvation. --203.26.206.130 06:55, 18 February 2006 (EST)

:::I have found that there are quite a few differences between the Orthodox Church and both "baseline" Western Protestantism (the presumption for "Christian" in most English-speaking forums) and Evangelical Protestantism. A merge would require so many caveats and exceptions as to be unwieldy. 134.68.153.37

What about interlinking instead?
I understand the thought, but one must also realize that not all these Wikis are for exactly the same purpose. I wouldn't necessarily combine them all together, but rather figure out what category each one fits into... For example, some are more leaning towards information about just Christianity itself, while Wikible and BibleWiki are more about the Bible itself. Some disadvantages of one wiki are... 1) If that site goes down, there's no other resource out there. 2) having more than one wiki furthers creativity because each wiki can have unique aspects of it's own.

What I think would be better is that if all the mentioned wikis would interlink between each other. Moving all the content to a single Wiki at this point would be a huge undertaking! atleast with interlinks, each site can grow in their specific areas. --Ymmotrojam 15:29, 30 December 2005 (GMT)

:One of the problems I see with interlinking between different wikis, is that once you link out of a wiki (say WikiChrisitan into Wikible) then all the new links are in the new wiki (Wikible in this case, and not WikiChristian). --203.26.206.130 06:52, 18 February 2006 (EST)

::I'm not sure I completely follow you. The whole point would be to have different wikis interlinked... WikiChristian could link to Theopedia and Wikible for example, and Theopedia and Wikible could link back to WikiChristian. --Ymmotrojam 09:47, 19 February 2006 (EST)

Common licensing
I think one thing that each site could consider doing the same, would be a common licensing schema. I, the creator of Wikible, personally prefer the GNU Free Documentation License. I do know though that other sites use different licenses or no license at all. My thinking about spiritual matters is that it should be free, and should remain free (free as in freedom), thus the reason why I like the GNU/FDL. --Ymmotrojam 01:14, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

:Just to add to the above, using the GNU/FDL allows content to be copied from other Wikis with the same license. It would be a violation of the GNU/FDL to copy from say Wikipedia, to a Wiki that had no license or a different one... --Ymmotrojam 01:18, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

In brief: Since the church was formed, major events and conflict, often over matters of doctrine has resulted in significant rifts in the church. Various Creeds and catechisms have been written as statements of the beliefs of different Christians. Today there is still considerable differences in understanding on major themes in Christianity like Justification, salvation and grace.
