God Forbids Graven Images
"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below." (Exodus 20.4) |
Leviticus 26:1, Deuteronomy 5:8, and Deuteronomy 27.15 agree with Exodus 20:4 above.
God Allows Graven Images
"You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat." (Exodus 25:18) |
"You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat." (Exodus 37:7-8) |
The Problem
Some passages in the Torah tell the Hebrews not to make graven images of creatures in heaven, but other passages record God telling the Hebrews to make sculptures of cherubim, a kind of angel.
