The understanding of marriage and being a wife has varied widely in time and cultures. The idea of marriage in the Bible beings in [[Genesis 2:24]] with God creating the woman to be with the man. There is no concept in this understanding of polygamy, although according to Genesis it appears that polygamy was soon widely accepted. By the time of the New Testament monogamy appears to have become the norm in Judah.

Both becoming a wife and the duties of a wife vary throughout Scripture and today throughout different cultures.

Divorce although acceptable under the Mosaic Law and Roman Law was essentially banned by Jesus. Through most of history since the time of Jesus divorce has been illegal in most predominantly Christian countries but in recent times it has been legalized throughout the Western World.
