Commentary

This verse in Revelation 3 reveals that although the church in Sardis appeared by superficial human standards to be, they were in fact judged by Christ to be otherwise. The church appeared to have a good reputation, but this image did not truly represent the church. Likewise today, the visible churches can be seen to be mixtures of the saved and false professors - mixtures of wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36-43) and of good creatures and bad (Matthew 13:47-48). The church in Sardis included those who would overcome, and those who would not not. Elsewhere in Revelation, great promises are given to those who overcome (Revelation 3:4-5

However, Revelation, and elsewhere in the Bible also warns us about those who appear to be saved, but are not, for example Matthew 7:22-23
