The gospel accounts of Jesus' life record numerous miracles that Jesus performed. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind and calmed the storms. These miracles act as a testimony to the deity of Christ. They also reveal his compassion for humanity. And ultimately, the miracles reveal the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Purpose of Jesus' miracles
Jesus' miracles reveal much about his identity and his mission and purpose.

The miracles of Jesus reveal his identity to us, showing us his authority. They link him with God. For example, when Jesus stills the storm in Matthew 8 his disciples question his identity, with the famous words, "Who is this man that even the wind and the waves obey him?" These show that Jesus' miracles point to God; and often after he performed signs, people would praise God.

Jesus' especially linked himself to God when he healed the paralyzed man in Luke 5. After first claiming to be able to forgive the man's sins (which the Pharisees pointed out, "Only God can forgive sins"), he then healed his paralysis.

Jesus' miracles revealed the Kingdom of God. This was perhaps the main purpose of his miracles, to demonstrate the presence of Kingdom of God in Jesus. Not only were the miracles associated with the proclamation of the Kingdom, but they also gave a better understanding of the Kingdom

* Exorcisms – show that God will overcome the realm of evil – Mark 3:26, Luke 11:20

* Raising the dead – announce that death will be conquered – John 11:23-26, 11:44

* Healing the sick – indicate that suffering will cease – Mark 1:41, Mark 5:19

* Lepers cleansed – show the removal of impurity

* Miraculous provisions of food – reveal the end of all physical needs

The miracles of Jesus revealed the need for faith in Him for salvation. In John 20:31, John reveals that the signs or miracles of Jesus were recorded so that "you may believe...". Many times Jesus linked faith to healing, such as Matthew 10 where he stated "your faith has healed you".

The miracles also show Jesus' purpose of compassion and service. This is an example for all people. An example of this compassion is seen in Luke 6 when Jesus heals the man with the withered hand, and in Luke 7 where a widow's son is healed.

Like the parables of Jesus, his miracles also revealed people's hearts. Some people saw the miracle and followed him; other hearts were hardened.
