Commentary
In John 11:25, Jesus is speaking to Martha, the sister of the dead Lazarus. Jesus reveals to her, that He is the one who gives life, and later in the chapter he actually raises Lazarus from death (John 11:43). The theme "I am" follows on from other examples in the Gospel of John including when Jesus states "I am the bread of life" in John 6:35 and "I am the good shepherd" in John 10:11.
Jesus' revelation about himself - "I am"
- John 6:35 - "I am the bread of life"
- John 8:12 - "I am the light of the world"
- John 8:58 - "I AM"
- John 10:9 - "I am the gate"
- John 10:11 - "I am the good shepherd"
- John 14:6 - "I am the way, the truth and the life"
- John 15:1 - "I am the true vine"
