Jihad
Jihad is a fundamental tenet of Islam. Military Jihad is a constant of the history of Islam. It is mandatory for all able-bodied Muslims.
Spiritual Jihad is about avoiding Islamic sins.
Negative Connotation
Islamophobes have been directly responsible for convincing people that the word "Jihad" means to declare war on those who do not follow the Islamic god. While it's possible to use this word in this particular context, it's far from generally true when Muslims talk about Jihad.
