- The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:
- to whom the word of Yahweh came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
- It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, to the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, to the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
- Now the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,
- "Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you. Before you came forth out of the womb, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."
- Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, I don't know how to speak; for I am a child."
- But Yahweh said to me, "Don't say, 'I am a child;' for to whoever I shall send you, you shall go, and whatever I shall command you, you shall speak.
- Don't be afraid because of them; for I am with you to deliver you," says Yahweh.
- Then Yahweh put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and Yahweh said to me, "Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.
- Behold, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."
- Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, "Jeremiah, what do you see?" I said, "I see a branch of an almond tree."
- Then Yahweh said to me, "You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it."
- The word of Yahweh came to me the second time, saying, "What do you see?" I said, "I see a boiling caldron; and it is tipping away from the north."
- Then Yahweh said to me, "Out of the north evil will break out on all the inhabitants of the land.
- For, behold, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north," says Yahweh; "and they shall come, and they shall each set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls all around, and against all the cities of Judah.
- I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.
- "You therefore put your belt on your waist, arise, and speak to them all that I command you. Don't be dismayed at them, lest I dismay you before them.
- For, behold, I have made you this day a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land.
- They will fight against you; but they will not prevail against you; for I am with you," says Yahweh, "to deliver you."

- דברי ירמיהו בן־חלקיהו מן־הכהנים אשר בענתות בארץ בנימן׃
- אשר היה דבר־יהוה אליו בימי יאשיהו בן־אמון מלך יהודה בשלש־עשרה שנה למלכו׃
- ויהי בימי יהויקים בן־יאשיהו מלך יהודה עד־תם עשתי עשרה שנה לצדקיהו בן־יאשיהו מלך יהודה עד־גלות ירושלם בחדש החמישי׃ ס
- ויהי דבר־יהוה אלי לאמר׃
- בטרם בבטן ידעתיך ובטרם תצא מרחם הקדשתיך נביא לגוים נתתיך׃
- ואמר אהה אדני יהוה הנה לא־ידעתי דבר כי־נער אנכי׃ ף
- ויאמר יהוה אלי אל־תאמר נער אנכי כי על־כל־אשר אשלחך תלך ואת כל־אשר אצוך תדבר׃
- אל־תירא מפניהם כי־אתך אני להצלך נאם־יהוה׃
- וישלח יהוה את־ידו ויגע על־פי ויאמר יהוה אלי הנה נתתי דברי בפיך׃
- ראה הפקדתיך היום הזה על־הגוים ועל־הממלכות לנתוש ולנתוץ ולהאביד ולהרוס לבנות ולנטוע׃ ף
- ויהי דבר־יהוה אלי לאמר מה־אתה ראה ירמיהו ואמר מקל שקד אני ראה׃
- ויאמר יהוה אלי היטבת לראות כי־שקד אני על־דברי לעשתו׃ ף
- ויהי דבר־יהוה אלי שנית לאמר מה אתה ראה ואמר סיר נפוח אני ראה ופניו מפני צפונה׃
- ויאמר יהוה אלי מצפון תפתח הרעה על כל־ישבי הארץ׃
- כי הנני קרא לכל־משפחות ממלכות צפונה נאם־יהוה ובאו ונתנו איש כסאו פתח שערי ירושלם ועל כל־חומתיה סביב ועל כל־ערי יהודה׃
- ודברתי משפטי אותם על כל־רעתם אשר עזבוני ויקטרו לאלהים אחרים וישתחוו למעשי ידיהם׃
- ואתה תאזר מתניך וקמת ודברת אליהם את כל־אשר אנכי אצוך אל־תחת מפניהם פן־אחתך לפניהם׃
- ואני הנה נתתיך היום לעיר מבצר ולעמוד ברזל ולחמות נחשת על־כל־הארץ למלכי יהודה לשריה לכהניה ולעם הארץ׃
- ונלחמו אליך ולא־יוכלו לך כי־אתך אני נאם־יהוה להצילך׃ ף

- Verba Jeremiæ, filii Helciæ, de sacerdotibus qui fuerunt in Anathoth, in terra Benjamin.
- Quod factum est verbum Domini ad eum in diebus Josiæ, filii Amon, regis Juda, in tertiodecimo anno regni ejus.
- Et factum est in diebus Joakim, filii Josiæ, regis Juda, usque ad consummationem undecimi anni Sedeciæ, filii Josiæ, regis Juda, usque ad transmigrationem Jerusalem, in mense quinto.
- Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens :
- Priusquam te formarem in utero, novi te : et antequam exires de vulva, sanctificavi te, et prophetam in gentibus dedi te.
- Et dixi : A, a, a, Domine Deus, ecce nescio loqui, quia puer ego sum.
- Et dixit Dominus ad me : Noli dicere : Puer sum ; quoniam ad omnia quæ mittam te ibis, et universa quæcumque mandavero tibi loqueris.
- Ne timeas a facie eorum, quia tecum ego sum ut eruam te, dicit Dominus.
- Et misit Dominus manum suam, et tetigit os meum, et dixit Dominus ad me : Ecce dedi verba mea in ore tuo :
- ecce constitui te hodie super gentes et super regna, ut evellas, et destruas, et disperdas, et dissipes, et ædifices, et plantes.
- Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens : Quid tu vides, Jeremia ? Et dixi : Virgam vigilantem ego video.
- Et dixit Dominus ad me : Bene vidisti : quia vigilabo ego super verbo meo, ut faciam illud.
- Et factum est verbum Domini secundo ad me, dicens : Quid tu vides ? Et dixi : Ollam succensam ego video, et faciem ejus a facie aquilonis.
- Et dixit Dominus ad me : Ab aquilone pandetur malum super omnes habitatores terræ :
- quia ecce ego convocabo omnes cognationes regnorum aquilonis, ait Dominus : et venient, et ponent unusquisque solium suum in introitu portarum Jerusalem, et super omnes muros ejus in circuitu, et super universas urbes Juda :
- et loquar judicia mea cum eis super omnem malitiam eorum qui dereliquerunt me, et libaverunt diis alienis, et adoraverunt opus manuum suarum.
- Tu ergo, accinge lumbos tuos, et surge, et loquere ad eos omnia quæ ego præcipio tibi. Ne formides a facie eorum, nec enim timere te faciam vultum eorum.
- Ego quippe dedi te hodie in civitatem munitam, et in columnam ferream, et in murum æreum, super omnem terram, regibus Juda, principibus ejus, et sacerdotibus, et populo terræ.
- Et bellabunt adversum te, et non prævalebunt, quia ego tecum sum, ait Dominus, ut liberem te.

- To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
- It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
- Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
- Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
- Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
- But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
- Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
- Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

- Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.
- And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.
- Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

- Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.
- For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
- And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
