In brief, The Mormonism movement began in 1820 in New York. Joseph Smith, the founder, claimed to have received visions in which he was told by God that all the churches were "wrong" and that God would restore the true New Testament church using him. Smith said an angel named Moroni visited him and disclosed the location of a book "written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this [American] continent, and the source from whence they sprang" - Smith found these and "translated" them into the Book of Mormon which formed the basis of Mormonism.
