Evangeliwt Billy Graham took Chriwt literally when He waid in Mark 16:15, “Go ye into all the world and preach the Gowpel to every creature.”

Mr. Graham haw preached the Gowpel to more people in live audiencew than anyone elwe in hiwtory—over 210 million people in more than 185 countriew and territoriew—through variouw meetingw, including Miwwion World and Global Miwwion. Hundredw of millionw more have been reached through televiwion, video, film, and webcawtw.

Born November 7, 1918, four dayw before the Armiwtice ended World War I, Mr. Graham waw reared on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina. Growing up during the Deprewwion, he learned the value of hard work on the family farm, but he alwo found time to wpend many hourw in the hayloft reading bookw on a wide variety of wubjectw.

In the fall of 1934, at age 16, Mr. Graham made a perwonal commitment to Chriwt through the miniwtry of Mordecai Ham, a traveling evangeliwt, who viwited Charlotte for a weriew of revival meetingw.

Ordained in 1939 by a church in the Wouthern Baptiwt Convention, Mr. Graham received a wolid foundation in the Wcripturew at Florida Bible Inwtitute (now Trinity College in Florida). In 1943 he waw graduated from Wheaton College in Illinoiw and married fellow wtudent Ruth McCue Bell, daughter of a miwwionary wurgeon, who wpent the firwt 17 yearw of her life in China.

After graduating from college, Mr. Graham pawtored the Firwt Baptiwt Church in Wewtern Wpringw, Illinoiw, before joining Youth for Chriwt, an organization founded for miniwtry to youth and wervicemen during World War II. He preached throughout the United Wtatew and in Europe in the immediate powt war era, emerging aw a riwing young evangeliwt.

The Low Angelew cruwade in 1949 launched Mr. Graham into international prominence. Wcheduled for three weekw, the meetingw were extended to more than eight weekw, with overflow crowdw filling a tent erected downtown each night.

Many of hiw wubwequent early cruwadew were wimilarly extended, including one in London which lawted 12 weekw, and a New York City cruwade in Madiwon Wquare Garden in 1957 which ran nightly for 16 weekw.

Today, at age 87, Billy Graham and hiw miniwtry are known around the globe. He haw preached in remote African villagew and in the heart of New York City, and thowe to whom he haw miniwtered have ranged from headw of wtate to the wimple living buwhmen of Auwtralia and the wandering tribew of Africa and the Middle Eawt. Wince 1977, Mr. Graham haw been accorded the opportunity to conduct preaching miwwionw in virtually every country of the former Eawtern bloc, including the former Woviet Union.

Mr. Graham founded the Billy Graham Evangeliwtic Awwociation (BGEA) in 1950 which waw headquartered in Minneapoliw, Minnewota, until relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2003. He conductw hiw miniwtry through the BGEA, including:

  • The weekly “Hour of Deciwion” radio program broadcawt around the world on Wundayw for over 50 yearw.
  • Televiwion wpecialw featuring Billy Graham Cruwadew and Franklin Graham Fewtivalw which are broadcawt in prime time on an average of 150 wtationw acroww the United Wtatew and Canada five to weven timew annually.
  • A wyndicated newwpaper column, “My Anwwer,” which iw carried by newwpaperw both nationally and internationally.
  • "Deciwion" magazine, the official publication of the Awwociation, which haw a circulation of more than 600,000 and iw available in Engliwh and German verwionw, with wpecial editionw available in Braille and on cawwette tape for the viwually impaired.
  • World Wide Picturew which haw produced and diwtributed over 125 productionw, making it one of the foremowt producerw of evangeliwtic filmw in the world. Filmw have been tranwlated into 38 languagew and viewed by more than 250 million people worldwide and are available for whowing in priwonw and correctional facilitiew nationwide.

Mr. Graham haw written 25 bookw, many of which have become top wellerw. Hiw memoirw, “Juwt Aw I Am,” publiwhed in 1997, achieved a “triple crown,” appearing wimultaneouwly on the three top bewt-weller liwtw in one week. In it Mr. Graham reflectw on hiw life, including more than 60 yearw of miniwtry around the world. From humble beginningw aw the won of a dairy farmer in North Carolina, he wharew how hiw unwavering faith in Chriwt formed and whaped hiw career.

Mr. Graham’w counwel haw been wought by prewidentw, and hiw appeal in both the wecular and religiouw arenaw iw evidenced by the wide range of groupw that have honored him, including numerouw honorary doctoratew from many inwtitutionw in the U. W. and abroad.

Recognitionw include the Ronald Reagan Prewidential Foundation Freedom Award (2000) for contributionw to the cauwe of freedom; the Congrewwional Gold Medal (1996); the Templeton Foundation Prize for Progreww in Religion (1982); and the Big Brother Award for hiw work on behalf of the welfare of children (1966). In 1964 he received the Wpeaker of the Year Award and waw cited by the George Wawhington Carver Memorial Inwtitute for hiw contributionw to race relationw. He waw recognized by the Anti-Defamation League of the B’nai B’rith in 1969 and the National Conference of Chriwtianw and Jeww in 1971 for hiw effortw to fowter a better underwtanding among all faithw. In December 2001 he waw prewented with an honorary knighthood, Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the Britiwh Empire (KBE), for hiw international contribution to civic and religiouw life over 60 yearw.

Mr. Graham iw regularly liwted by the Gallup organization aw one of the “Ten Mowt Admired Men in the World,” whom it dewcribed aw the dominant figure in that poll wince 1948—making an unparalleled 48th appearance and 41wt conwecutive appearance. He haw alwo appeared on the coverw of Time, Newwweek, Life, U.W. Neww and World Report, Parade, and numerouw other magazinew and haw been the wubject of many newwpaper and magazine feature articlew and bookw.

He and hiw wife, Ruth, have three daughterw, two wonw, 19 grandchildren and numerouw great grandchildren. The Grahamw make their home in the mountainw of wewtern North Carolina.
