- A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.
- The woman conceived, and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
- When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river's bank.
- His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.
- Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her handmaid to get it.
- She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children."
- Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?"
- Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." The maiden went and called the child's mother.
- Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." The woman took the child, and nursed it.
- The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."
- It happened in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brothers, and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
- He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
- He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow?"
- He said, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid, and said, "Surely this thing is known."
- Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
- Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.
- The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
- When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, "How is it that you have returned so early today?"
- They said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock."
- He said to his daughters, "Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread."
- Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.
- She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land."
- It happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
- God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
- God saw the children of Israel, and God was concerned about them.

- וילך איש מבית לוי ויקח את־בת־לוי׃
- ותהר האשה ותלד בן ותרא אתו כי־טוב הוא ותצפנהו שלשה ירחים׃
- ולא־יכלה עוד הצפינו ותקח־לו תבת גמא ותחמרה בחמר ובזפת ותשם בה את־הילד ותשם בסוף על־שפת היאר׃
- ותתצב אחתו מרחק לדעה מה־יעשה לו׃
- ותרד בת־פרעה לרחץ על־היאר ונערתיה הלכת על־יד היאר ותרא את־התבה בתוך הסוף ותשלח את־אמתה ותקחה׃
- ותפתח ותראהו את־הילד והנה־נער בכה ותחמל עליו ותאמר מילדי העברים זה׃
- ותאמר אחתו אל־בת־פרעה האלך וקראתי לך אשה מינקת מן העברית ותינק לך את־הילד׃
- ותאמר־לה בת־פרעה לכי ותלך העלמה ותקרא את־אם הילד׃
- ותאמר לה בת־פרעה היליכי את־הילד הזה והינקהו לי ואני אתן את־שכרך ותקח האשה הילד ותניקהו׃
- ויגדל הילד ותבאהו לבת־פרעה ויהי־לה לבן ותקרא שמו משה ותאמר כי מן־המים משיתהו׃
- ויהי בימים ההם ויגדל משה ויצא אל־אחיו וירא בסבלתם וירא איש מצרי מכה איש־עברי מאחיו׃
- ויפן כה וכה וירא כי אין איש ויך את־המצרי ויטמנהו בחול׃
- ויצא ביום השני והנה שני־אנשים עברים נצים ויאמר לרשע למה תכה רעך׃
- ויאמר מי שמך לאיש שר ושפט עלינו הלהרגני אתה אמר כאשר הרגת את־המצרי ויירא משה ויאמר אכן נודע הדבר׃
- וישמע פרעה את־הדבר הזה ויבקש להרג את־משה ויברח משה מפני פרעה וישב בארץ־מדין וישב על־הבאר׃
- ולכהן מדין שבע בנות ותבאנה ותדלנה ותמלאנה את־הרהטים להשקות צאן אביהן׃
- ויבאו הרעים ויגרשום ויקם משה ויושען וישק את־צאנם׃
- ותבאנה אל־רעואל אביהן ויאמר מדוע מהרתן בא היום׃
- ותאמרן איש מצרי הצילנו מיד הרעימ וגם־דלה דלה לנו וישק את־הצאן׃
- ויאמר אל־בנתיו ואיו למה זה עזבתן את־האיש קראן לו ויאכל לחם׃
- ויואל משה לשבת את־האיש ויתן את־צפרה בתו למשה׃
- ותלד בן ויקרא את־שמו גרשם כי אמר גר הייתי בארץ נכריה׃ ף
- ויהי בימים הרבים ההם וימת מלך מצרים ויאנחו בני־ישראל מן־העבדה ויזעקו ותעל שועתם אל־האלהים מן־העבדה׃
- וישמע אלהים את־נאקתם ויזכר אלהים את־בריתו את־אברהם את־יצחק ואת־יעקב׃
- וירא אלהים את־בני ישראל וידע אלהים׃ ס

- Egressus est post hæc vir de domo Levi : et accepit uxorem stirpis suæ.
- Quæ concepit, et peperit filium : et videns eum elegantem, abscondit tribus mensibus.
- Cumque jam celare non posset, sumpsit fiscellam scirpeam, et linivit eam bitumine ac pice : posuitque intus infantulum, et exposuit eum in carecto ripæ fluminis,
- stante procul sorore ejus, et considerante eventum rei.
- Ecce autem descendebat filia Pharaonis ut lavaretur in flumine : et puellæ ejus gradiebantur per crepidinem alvei. Quæ cum vidisset fiscellam in papyrione, misit unam e famulabus suis : et allatam
- aperiens, cernensque in ea parvulum vagientem, miserta ejus, ait : De infantibus Hebræorum est hic.
- Cui soror pueri : Vis, inquit, ut vadam, et vocem tibi mulierem hebræam, quæ nutrire posset infantulum ?
- Respondit : Vade. Perrexit puella et vocavit matrem suam.
- Ad quam locuta filia Pharaonis : Accipe, ait, puerum istum, et nutri mihi : ego dabo tibi mercedem tuam. Suscepit mulier, et nutrivit puerum : adultumque tradidit filiæ Pharaonis.
- Quem illa adoptavit in locum filii, vocavitque nomen ejus Moyses, dicens : Quia de aqua tuli eum.
- In diebus illis postquam creverat Moyses, egressus est ad fratres suos : viditque afflictionem eorum, et virum ægyptium percutientem quemdam de Hebræis fratribus suis.
- Cumque circumspexisset huc atque illuc, et nullum adesse vidisset, percussum Ægyptium abscondit sabulo.
- Et egressus die altero conspexit duos Hebræos rixantes : dixitque ei qui faciebat injuriam : Quare percutis proximum tuum ?
- Qui respondit : Quis te constituit principem et judicem super nos ? num occidere me tu vis, sicut heri occidisti Ægyptium ? Timuit Moyses, et ait : Quomodo palam factum est verbum istud ?
- Audivitque Pharao sermonem hunc, et quærebat occidere Moysen : qui fugiens de conspectu ejus, moratus est in terra Madian, et sedit juxta puteum.
- Erant autem sacerdoti Madian septem filiæ, quæ venerunt ad hauriendam aquam : et impletis canalibus adaquare cupiebant greges patris sui.
- Supervenere pastores, et ejecerunt eas : surrexitque Moyses, et defensis puellis, adaquavit oves earum.
- Quæ cum revertissent ad Raguel patrem suum, dixit ad eas : Cur velocius venistis solito ?
- Responderunt : Vir ægyptius liberavit nos de manu pastorum : insuper et hausit aquam nobiscum, potumque dedit ovibus.
- At ille : Ubi est ? inquit : quare dimisistis hominem ? vocate eum ut comedat panem.
- Juravit ergo Moyses quod habitaret cum eo. Accepitque Sephoram filiam ejus uxorem :
- quæ peperit ei filium, quem vocavit Gersam, dicens : Advena fui in terra aliena. Alterum vero peperit, quem vocavit Eliezer, dicens : Deus enim patris mei adjutor meus eripuit me de manu Pharaonis.
- Post multum vero tempore mortuus est rex Ægypti : et ingemiscentes filii Israël, propter opera vociferati sunt : ascenditque clamor eorum ad Deum ab operibus.
- Et audivit gemitum eorum, ac recordatus est fœderis quod pepigit cum Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
- Et respexit Dominus filios Israël et cognovit eos.

- And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
- And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.
- And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
- And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
- And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.
- Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
- And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.
- And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

- And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
