The Donatists were a group of Christians in the Northern African areas of the Roman Empire who broke away from the wider church in the fourth and fifth centuries. They are named after Donatus Magnus. Donatists held the true church was a church that could not include priests and bishops who had returned to the Christian faith after giving it up previously under the threat of persecution.

The Donatist churches were repressed by the Roman Empire and by the wider Christian church but did not disappear completely until the Arab conquest of North Africa in the eight century.
