Capital punishment (or the death penalty) is the execution of a convicted criminal by the State as punishment for a crime. Most Western countries have abolished the death penalty because it is considered barbaric and unnecessary. A notable exception is the United States. Although there are a variety of views about whether the Bible condemns or approves of the death penalty, many Christians are morally opposed to it, because once dead a person is unable to repent and find Christ, among other reasons. Again, notably, many Christians, especially evangelical Christians in America are in favour of it.
