In brief: The Athanasian Creed is a statement of Christian doctrine traditionally ascribed to Athanasius, Archbishop of Alexandria, who lived in the 4th century. Most of today's historians agree that Athanasius was not the original author. It was designed to overcome Arianism. The creed is used it in the Roman Catholic Church.
