Matthew 14 Text (WEB) At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus, and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him." For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. She, being prompted by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer." The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. His disciples came, and took the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities. Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food." But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish." He said, "Bring them here to me." He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the multitudes. They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces. Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It's a ghost!" and they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! It is I! Don't be afraid." Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." He said, "Come!" Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased. Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!" When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region, and brought to him all who were sick, and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
Matthew 14 Text (Hebrew) בעת ההיא שמע הורדוס שר רבע המדינה את שמע ישוע׃ ויאמר אל נעריו זה הוא יוחנן המטביל והוא קם מן המתים על כן הגבורות פעלות בו׃ כי הורדוס תפש את יוחנן ויאסרהו וישימהו בבית הסהר בגלל הורודיה אשת פילפוס אחיו׃ כי יוחנן אמר אליו לא נכון היתה לך לאשה׃ ויבקש המיתו אך ירא את ההמון כי לנביא חשבו אתו׃ ויהי ביום הלדת הורדוס ותרקד בת הורודיה בתוכם ותיטב בעיני הורדוס׃ וישבע לה ויאמר מה תשאל נפשך ואתן לך׃ ואמה שמה את הדברים בפיה ותשאל לאמר תנה לי פה בקערה את ראש יוחנן המטביל׃ ויעצב המלך אך בעבור השבועה והמסבים עמו צוה לתת לה׃ וישלח וישא את ראש יוחנן מעליו בבית הסהר׃ ויביאו את ראשו בקערה ויתנו לנערה ותביאהו אל אמה׃ ויגשו תלמידיו וישאו את גויתו ויקברוה וילכו ויגידו לישוע׃ ויהי כשמעו את זאת ויסר משם באניה אל מקום חרבה לבדד וישמעו המון העם וילכו אחריו ברגליהם מן הערים׃ ויצא ישוע וירא המון עם רב ויהמו מעיו עליהם וירפא את החלשים אשר בהם׃ ויהי לפנות ערב ויגשו אליו תלמידיו ויאמרו המקום חרב וגם נטה היום שלחה את המון העם וילכו אל הכפרים לקנות להם אכל׃ ויאמר אליהם אינם צריכים ללכת תנו אתם להם לאכל׃ ויאמרו אליו אין לנו פה כי אם חמשת ככרות לחם ושני דגים׃ ויאמר הביאום אלי הלם׃ ויצו את העם לשבת על הדשא ויקח את חמשת ככרות הלחם ואת שני הדגים וישא עיניו השמימה ויברך ויפרס ויתן את הלחם לתלמידים והתלמידים נתנו לעם׃ ויאכלו כלם וישבעו וישאו מן הפתותים הנותרים שנים עשר סלים מלאים׃ והאכלים היו כחמשת אלפי איש מלבד הנשים והטף׃ ויאץ ישוע בתלמידיו לרדת באניה לעבר לפניה אל עבר הים עד אשר ישלח את העם׃ ואחרי שלחו את העם עלה ההרה בדד להתפלל ויהי ערב והוא לבדו שמה׃ והאניה הלכה בתוך הים ותטרף מן הגלים כי הרוח לנגדה׃ ויהי באשמרת הרביעית ויבא אליהם ישוע מתהלך על פני הים׃ והתלמידים בראתם אותו מתהלך על פני הים נבהלו לאמר מראה רוח הוא ויצעקו מפחד׃ וידבר ישוע פתאם אליהם חזקו כי אני הוא אל תיראו׃ ויען פטרוס ויאמר אליו אם אתה הוא אדני צוה נא כי אבא אליך על המים׃ ויאמר בוא וירד פטרוס מן האניה ויתהלך על המים לבוא אל ישוע׃ ויהי כראתו את הרוח כי חזקה היא ויירא ויחל לטבע ויצעק לאמר אדני הושיעני׃ וימהר ישוע לשלח את ידו ויחזק בו ויאמר אליו קטן האמונה למה לחק לבך׃ הם עלו אל האניה והרוח שככה׃ ואנשי האניה נגשו וישתחוו לו לאמר באמת בן אלהים אתה׃ ויעברו את הים ויבאו ארצה גניסר׃ ויכירו אתו אנשי המקום ההוא וישלחו אל כל סביבותיהם ויביאו אליו את כל החולים׃ ויבקשו ממנו כי יגעו רק בציצת בגדו וכל הנגעים נושעו׃
Matthew 14 Text (Greek) εν εκεινω τω καιρω ηκουσεν ηρωδης ο τετρααρχης την ακοην ιησου και ειπεν τοις παισιν αυτου ουτος εστιν ιωαννης ο βαπτιστης αυτος ηγερθη απο των νεκρων και δια τουτο αι δυναμεις ενεργουσιν εν αυτω ο γαρ ηρωδης κρατησας τον ιωαννην εδησεν και εν φυλακη απεθετο δια ηρωδιαδα την γυναικα φιλιππου του αδελφου αυτου ελεγεν γαρ ο ιωαννης αυτω ουκ εξεστιν σοι εχειν αυτην και θελων αυτον αποκτειναι εφοβηθη τον οχλον οτι ως προφητην αυτον ειχον γενεσιοις δε γενομενοις του ηρωδου ωρχησατο η θυγατηρ της ηρωδιαδος εν τω μεσω και ηρεσεν τω ηρωδη οθεν μεθ ορκου ωμολογησεν αυτη δουναι ο εαν αιτησηται η δε προβιβασθεισα υπο της μητρος αυτης δος μοι φησιν ωδε επι πινακι την κεφαλην ιωαννου του βαπτιστου και λυπηθεις ο βασιλευς δια τους ορκους και τους συνανακειμενους εκελευσεν δοθηναι και πεμψας απεκεφαλισεν ιωαννην εν τη φυλακη και ηνεχθη η κεφαλη αυτου επι πινακι και εδοθη τω κορασιω και ηνεγκεν τη μητρι αυτης και προσελθοντες οι μαθηται αυτου ηραν το πτωμα και εθαψαν και ελθοντες απηγγειλαν τω ιησου ακουσας δε ο ιησους ανεχωρησεν εκειθεν εν πλοιω εις ερημον τοπον κατ ιδιαν και ακουσαντες οι οχλοι ηκολουθησαν αυτω πεζη απο των πολεων και εξελθων ειδεν πολυν οχλον και εσπλαγχνισθη επ αυτοις και εθεραπευσεν τους αρρωστους αυτων οψιας δε γενομενης προσηλθον αυτω οι μαθηται λεγοντες ερημος εστιν ο τοπος και η ωρα ηδη παρηλθεν απολυσον τους οχλους ινα απελθοντες εις τας κωμας αγορασωσιν εαυτοις βρωματα ο δε ειπεν αυτοις ου χρειαν εχουσιν απελθειν δοτε αυτοις υμεις φαγειν οι δε λεγουσιν αυτω ουκ εχομεν ωδε ει μη πεντε αρτους και δυο ιχθυας ο δε ειπεν φερετε μοι ωδε αυτους και κελευσας τους οχλους ανακλιθηναι επι του χορτου λαβων τους πεντε αρτους και τους δυο ιχθυας αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ευλογησεν και κλασας εδωκεν τοις μαθηταις τους αρτους οι δε μαθηται τοις οχλοις και εφαγον παντες και εχορτασθησαν και ηραν το περισσευον των κλασματων δωδεκα κοφινους πληρεις οι δε εσθιοντες ησαν ανδρες ωσει πεντακισχιλιοι χωρις γυναικων και παιδιων και ηναγκασεν τους μαθητας εμβηναι εις πλοιον και προαγειν αυτον εις το περαν εως ου απολυση τους οχλους και απολυσας τους οχλους ανεβη εις το ορος κατ ιδιαν προσευξασθαι οψιας δε γενομενης μονος ην εκει το δε πλοιον ηδη σταδιους πολλους απο της γης απειχεν βασανιζομενον υπο των κυματων ην γαρ εναντιος ο ανεμος τεταρτη δε φυλακη της νυκτος ηλθεν προς αυτους περιπατων επι την θαλασσαν οι δε μαθηται ιδοντες αυτον επι της θαλασσης περιπατουντα εταραχθησαν λεγοντες οτι φαντασμα εστιν και απο του φοβου εκραξαν ευθυς δε ελαλησεν αυτοις λεγων θαρσειτε εγω ειμι μη φοβεισθε αποκριθεις δε κυριε ει συ ει κελευσον με ελθειν προς σε επι τα υδατα ο δε ειπεν ελθε και καταβας απο του πλοιου πετρος περιεπατησεν επι τα υδατα και ηλθεν προς τον ιησουν βλεπων δε τον ανεμον εφοβηθη και αρξαμενος καταποντιζεσθαι εκραξεν λεγων κυριε σωσον με ευθεως δε ο ιησους εκτεινας την χειρα επελαβετο αυτου και λεγει αυτω ολιγοπιστε εις τι εδιστασας και αναβαντων αυτων εις το πλοιον εκοπασεν ο ανεμος οι δε εν τω πλοιω προσεκυνησαν αυτω λεγοντες αληθως θεου υιος ει και διαπερασαντες ηλθον επι την γην εις γεννησαρετ και επιγνοντες αυτον οι ανδρες του τοπου εκεινου απεστειλαν εις ολην την περιχωρον εκεινην και προσηνεγκαν αυτω παντας τους κακως εχοντας και παρεκαλουν ινα μονον αψωνται του κρασπεδου του ιματιου αυτου και οσοι ηψαντο διεσωθησαν
Matthew 14 Text (Latin) In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha fama Jesu : et ait pueris suis : Hic est Joannes Baptista : ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo. Herodes enim tenuit Joannem, et alligavit eum : et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui. Dicebat enim illi Joannes : Non licet tibi habere eam. Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum : quia sicut prophetam eum habebant. Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi : unde cum juramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo. At illa præmonita a matre sua : Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ. Et contristatus est rex : propter juramentum autem, et eos qui pariter recumbebant, jussit dari. Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere. Et allatum est caput ejus in disco, et datum est puellæ, et attulit matri suæ. Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud : et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu. Quod cum audisset Jesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum : et cum audissent turbæ, secutæ sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus. Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum. Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes : Desertus est locus, et hora jam præteriit : dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas. Jesus autem dixit eis : Non habent necesse ire : date illis vos manducare. Responderunt ei : Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces. Qui ait eis : Afferte mihi illos huc. Et cum jussisset turbam discumbere super fœnum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in cælum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis. Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos. Manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis. Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas. Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi : navicula autem in medio mari jactabatur fluctibus : erat enim contrarius ventus. Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans super mare. Et videntes eum super mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes : Quia phantasma est. Et præ timore clamaverunt. Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens : Habete fiduciam : ego sum, nolite timere. Respondens autem Petrus, dixit : Domine, si tu es, jube me ad te venire super aquas. At ipse ait : Veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Jesum. Videns vero ventum validum, timuit : et cum cœpisset mergi, clamavit dicens : Domine, salvum me fac. Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum : et ait illi : Modicæ fidei, quare dubitasti ? Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus. Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes : Vere Filius Dei es. Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar. Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes : et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
