Capital punishment (or the death penalty) is the execution of a convicted criminal by the State as punishment for a crime. Most Western countries have abolished the death penalty because it is considered barbaric and unnecessary. A notable exception is the United States. Although the Bible neither condemns nor approves of the death penalty, many Christians are morally opposed to it, because once dead a person is unable to repent and find Christ, among other reasons.
