The [[gospel]] according to [[Apostle John|John]] is the fourth book of the [[New Testament]]. It was probably the fourth of the accounts of the [[Jesus]]' life to be written. The apostle John was probably the author and he is referred to throughout the book as the disciple Jesus loved.

=='''SO I HERD U LIEK MUDKIPZ'''==
Major changes are underway in the system of referencing to the Bible within WikiChristian.

==Aim of these changes==

All up these changes may take a number of weeks or months, so please be patient. The aims are:
* To have the whole Bible, verse by verse uploaded, so that any verse, chapter or book can be linked to
** Example: [[Gospel of John]], [[John 11]], [[John 11:35]]
* To have a standardized way of referencing to a Bible passage
** Example: <nowiki>{{web_verse|john|11|25}}</nowiki> will display: {{web_verse|john|11|25}}
* To have a system in place, so that adding links within a verse itself will affect the verse where-ever it is displayed
** This can be achieved by editing the template for an individual verse such as <nowiki>{{web_verse|john|11|25}}</nowiki>

==Technical stuff - skip this if you aren't interested==

This can be achieved by using templates. [[User:Graham grove|I]] am in the process of uploading each individual verse for the entire Bible. I am using Visual Basic to extract individual verses from a text file and then create the required XML files for the templates and pages. This will make it a reasonably automated process, but is still a bit fiddly, because I have to keep an eye out for errors in the XML files I am creating. So it may take me a few months to do this completely.

==Which version?==

We are using the public domain World English Bible as the text. Eventually, the same system could be employed to upload other versions such as the King James, American Standard, and Greek and Hebrew versions.

==Writing commentaries, sermons and personal opinions==

The plan is not only to have the text of the Bible, but also to have commentaries on each book, chapter and verse; and also to allow people to add their own personal articles or sermons about the passage. The "commentary" part is the main task. Each page will be set out as follows:
* Synopsis
** A one or two sentence summary of the main point of the verse, chapter or book
* Translations
** Links to different translations - initially the World English Version; later other versions such as KJV
* Comments, Personal Articles and Studies
** A link to a discussion page for pepole to leave 1 or 2 sentence remarks or opinions about the passage
** Links for any personal opinion articles or sermons on the passage
* Commentary
** The bulk of the article goes here - this is to be an encyclopedia style article that is about the passage in question - it should not be full of personal opinions but instead should explain the various accepted interpretations on the passages
* Quotes
** Any quotes related to the passage can go here
* Links
** Any relevant external links can go here
* Return To ...
** Returns you up one level; so John 3:16 will Return To John 3, which will have Return To The Gospel of John

==What does it look like in practice==

The Gospel of John has been uploaded, and some of its pages have commentaries.

Take a look at
* [[Gospel of John]]
* [[John 11]]
* [[John 11:25]]
* [[John 11:35]]
* [[John 3:16]]
* [[Matthew 16]]

==How can you help?==

So far, the following have been uploaded:
* [[Gospel of Matthew]] | [[Gospel of Mark]] | [[Gospel of Luke]] | [[Gospel of John]]
* [[Acts of the Apostles]]
* [[Epistle to the Romans]] | [[First Epistle to the Corinthians]] | [[Second Epistle to the Corinthians]] | [[Epistle to the Galatians]] | [[Epistle to the Ephesians]] | [[Epistle to the Philippians]] | [[Epistle to the Colossians]] | [[First Epistle to the Thessalonians]] | [[Second Epistle to the Thessalonians]] | [[First Epistle to Timothy]] | [[Second Epistle to Timothy]] | [[Epistle to Titus]] | [[Epistle to Philemon]]
* [[Epistle to the Hebrews]] | [[Epistle of James]] | [[First Epistle of Peter]] | [[Second Epistle of Peter]] | [[First Epistle of John]] | [[Second Epistle of John]] | [[Third Epistle of John]] | [[Epistle of Jude]]
* [[Book of Revelation]]
* [[Genesis]] | [[Exodus]] | [[Leviticus]] | [[Numbers]] | [[Deuteronomy]]
* [[Book of Joshua]] | [[First Kings]] | [[Second Kings]] | [[Book of Ezra]]
* [[Book of Job]] | [[Psalms]] | [[Lamentations]]
* [[Book of Isaiah]] | [[Book of Amos]] | [[Book of Hosea]] | [[Book of Micah]] | [[Book of Zechariah]] | [[Book of Haggai]]

'''Start helping out in one of the above books by doing any of the following:'''
# Write/edit the synopsis for a passage
# Write/edit the "Commentary" for a passage
# Add appropriate external links to the "Links" section for a passage
# Upload a sermon you have given for a passage and add it to the "Comments, Personal Articles and Studies"
# Edit a verse template putting in links for important words like <nowiki>[[Jesus]], [[God]], [[Apostle Peter|Peter]], [[forgiveness|forgive]], [[sin]], [[eternal life]]</nowiki>

A wiki website is a site that allows users to add content, as on an internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. There are a number of wiki websites related to [[Christianity]].

The first wiki was set up by Ward Cunningham in 1995. Wikipedia, the most well known wiki website, was started in 2001, and currently contains millions of articles. It contains thousands of articles related to [[religion]]. One of the criticisms that adherents to various religious groups have however is that in attempting to maintain a neutral point of view, some of the teachings of their religion can be "watered-down" or altered. These critics also state that the neutral point of view is in the eye of the beholder. In response to some of these criticism, explicitly [[Christian]] wiki websites have been set up. The majority of them adhere to a specific Christian [[denomination]] or tradition, including most that claim to be non-specifically "Christian" in nature. They tend to fall into three categories, Online [[Bible]] encyclopedias (of varying completeness and denominational emphases), general Christianity wikis without a specific denominational slant, and wikis devoted to a specific Christian denomination or tradition.

===History of Christian wikis===

The first Christian wiki was clublet.com, begun by Richard Drake in 2000. Another early Christian wiki was Compass, which was set up by Richard Hall in early 2001. Although still online, this has been essentially empty for a number of years now. In 2004 WikiChristian was set up and was for a time the only Christian wiki that was not specifically denominational. Other wikis developed in early 2005 included Orthodox Wiki (for [[Eastern Orthodoxy]]) and Theopedia (for Reformed Protestantism).

In more recent times there has been an explosion of Christian wikis, particularly "Bible" wikis dedicated to Biblical Christianity, such as Wikible.

No Christian wikis have achieved anything like the numerical success of editors that wikipedia has. There are regular users particularly of Theopedia and OrthodoxWiki, and to a lesser extent WikiChristian, Wikible and Christianity Knowledge Base.
