The English word ''ministry'' translates ideas of service found throughout the [[Bible]]. The Greek word ''diakonia'' means service or ministry and is related to ''diakonos'', a servant or minister. Other New Testament images include the worker, herald, shepherd, steward, elder and ambassador. These images emphasize responsibility entrusted by God rather than personal status.

Christian ministry has several closely related dimensions:

Ministry is therefore larger than the work of clergy, employment by a church or activity inside a church building. A Christian may minister through family life, ordinary work, hospitality, art, healthcare, education, public service, advocacy, digital communication or practical acts of love. At the same time, most Christian traditions formally set apart certain people for sustained leadership, teaching and sacramental or pastoral responsibilities.

==The ministry of Jesus Christ==

Jesus is the source, content and model of Christian ministry. The Gospels portray his ministry as proclamation, teaching, healing, deliverance, compassion, table fellowship, prayer, prophetic challenge and the formation of disciples. He announced good news to the poor and freedom for the oppressed (Luke 4:16–21), described himself as the [[Good Shepherd]] (John 10:1–18), washed his disciples' feet (John 13:1–17) and taught that the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

The [[crucifixion of Jesus]] reveals ministry as self-giving love, while the [[resurrection of Jesus]] establishes Christian hope and mission.
